Clary Sage and Spoon Rests

Clary sage, Salvia sclarea, volunteers are popping up all over the place. Originally the Clary sage was growing in my herb garden, but it has reseeded itself all over the side yard. These plants may look like weeds growing in the gravel, but to me they are a welcome site. I just love the texture of these leaves. I use these and other leaves for my leaf plates.

Here's a new crop of my porcelain leaf plates drying. I have several batches of these plates drying and waiting for the bisque load. I also use red and brown clay for my leaf plates because the same glazes come out so different on the various clay bodies. These leaf plates are very versatile and can be used for bread and butter plates, dessert plates, spoon rests, candle rests, or just a nice accent on a table.

I have another use for these plates in my mind, I'll let you know about that later if my idea proves to be a good one. I just love combining my love of gardening with my love of clay. It is so satisfying.

Today I am headed to the school studio to finish my glazing, finish loading the glaze load into the kiln, and hopefully get a few more pieces made. I'm also going to try bringing my sculpture to the studio. I am planning on loading it into a box with some of those foam peanuts and hopefully it will make the trip. I may have a line of cars behind me as I make the 17 mile trip to school. Wish me luck.

  3. Thanks Cheryl, I can't wait for my maple tree leaves to change; they are so beautiful, but I bet you get an even more spectacular Fall color show up your way. That's one thing I miss about living in the mountains. We are only 1000 foot elevation here.

  4. Thanks Deborah, at a show this past weekend, a boy scout came up to my booth and saw a pine needle and pine cone imprssed leaf plate I had made and he said "Is that a fossil?" I considered it a great compliment coming from him. That's one of the reasons I love going to shows - hearing and experiencing the comments of those visiting my booth especially children - out of the mouths of babes.
