Black Feather

My sketch books are filling up with drawings of pieces I want to make in clay. The drawings feel like sticky notes all over my brain. If I have sticky notes, I can't wait till I complete what is on the sticky note, so I can throw the sticky note away. Here's one of the sticky notes I get to toss out of my brain, Black Feather. Actually this is one half of a double sticky note, I'm still working on the companion piece, White Feather. So I guess I have to hold on to this sticky note for a while longer. How about you, do you have any sticky notes in your brain you'd like to toss out?

I think the piece looks like my drawing, but I'm not sure about the eyes. I may want to change them in the morning. Sometimes there are things I would like to say but know I shouldn't, because I just know what I say will come back to bite me later on. Other times there are things I wish I had said but didn't. And then there are the times I say things and later regret saying them. Sometimes life is perfectly imperfect.

The flower for today is a yarrow, but you may not be familiar with this variety, which is Paprika. This is a great variety of yarrow, it's drought tolerant, good for a cut flower, the foliage is bright and feathery, and the blossoms fade to pale yellow, then brown, and look nice in any stage of bloom in the garden.

  3. Hi Meredith, I thought the older I got my sticky notes would get less and less, doesn't seem to be happening and now I have clay sticky notes too - those are the fun ones though.

Hi Gary, thanks, yes the gold yarrow is more common. I have that one too and it is a great as a dried flower.

  4. Great sticky note analogy Linda -you are so right! You know you're onto something with the sticky note thing when the Mac OS has a desktop program for them and lets you keep virtual sticky notes on your laptop -ha!

your Black Feather piece is WONDERFUL! good work.

  6. Hi Cindy, virtual sticky notes, I used to keep stuff in my calendar which would popup and remind me to do them, I only occasionally use it any more. thanks about Black Feather, it will shrink some and is on a form to keep it from flattening out so it will look better once it is fired.

Hi Mary, thanks about Black Feather. I am not sure that is the best name for the piece, might be better as keep quiet or some such; still thinking about that.

  7. Paprika yarrow... wow, beautiful!... Interesting project too. I like the idea of calling it "keep quiet".

  8. "Sometimes life if perfectly imperfect." - Yes it is... :) I say that with a smile because when I think I've got things under control, I'm reminded that life isn't perfect and to roll more.

Love Paprika yarrow - my favorite!

I say, Linda - you are becoming quite the prolific blogger and potter! Love "Black Feather"!

  10. Hi Patricia, I may change the name, I wanted to explain a little about the piece, because the clay appears brown now but will fire black, but now that I think about it, keep quiet or keeping quiet is much more in line with why this idea came to me. Thanks.

Hi Cynthia, boy oh boy it is so true about imperfection. My phone line was zapped out last night and I tried everything to fix it but it must be the outside phone lines, but it is so strange as I can dial out, but the phone company said the computer is more sensitive than the phone lines, so it may be a while before I have another post. Phone company is coming tomorrow one of the disadvantages of dial up, so I've gone to the library.

Thanks about the blogging and potting. I find the exercise of blogging is really beneficial to me. If I didn't have to keep up with my property I could get a lot more clay stuff done, but posting about sticky notes has made me realize I need to set a goal for myself and get more pieces in my sketch books done, I feel much better afterwards. I really have a need or urge to make my clay pieces.

Hi Jim, thanks, I am not sure where these ideas come from, probably the recesses of my mind; I just have an urge to make them. The piece is a little larger than the drawing and wider, but I figured it would shrink some after firing. Hope all goes well with the two different clays after firing; we shall see.

  12. Great line about drawings feeling like sticky notes all over your brain. The dilemma of whether to talk or keep quiet is a hard one. I hope you do the companion piece.

  13. Hi Kari, that sure is true, everything is on sticky, even the weather. I just love it when you comment I always check out your website and get to see your beautiful ceramic pieces. Wish you were just around the corner I'd stop in to your studio to meet you and see your ceramics in person.

Hi Barbara, thanks about the drawings, I think if I get some of those out of my brain I might be able to accomplish some other things I am supposed to be doing. I'm thinking about the companion piece right now, but the computer and phone lines are taking priority for the next couple of days.

  14. Your work is gorgeous! And I popped over here to leave you a note to thank you for the laugh you gave me on Barbara's blog ClayGarden. As I said there, "...Then I read Linda's 3 comments and laughed out loud and long for the first time in a while. I needed that. Thanks Barbara AND Linda!"

  15. Hi Jana, I was typing at the library and just couldn't get my fingers to work - so glad I gave you a laugh; I just checked your blog briefly and was inspired by the Fake Journal Month.

There are so many talented artists in the world I just love getting to know folks through their blogs. I stop in at your blog occasionally, but not as often as I would like, I love your work - as I am learning to appreciate the thought(s) behind artist's work as well as their work. So much to learn about art and so little time.
