Goblets

Bronze Goblets by Linda Starr
4 x 2.5 inches

Sometimes I am hopeful and then happily surprised at my glazing results. These goblets turned out just like I wanted them. I made a set of four of these. The are pinched from Texas white clay, fired in oxidation cone 6. Now I want to make taller ones with even more wavy stems.

These green and black metallic goblets also fired as I hoped.

I hope you can overlook the background. I had to use a summer blouse for a backdrop since we are in our RV.

Stay tuned for more results from this firing. I'm working on the wire handle for the basket, trying to figure out what to do with the ends of the wire I plan to slide through the holes in the basket. Please come back if you know anything about bending or using wire handles. I can use all the help I can get. I'm also expecting to pick up the cone 4 pieces being fired this week.

  2. Linda these are WONDERFUL! The goblets remind me of Indiana Jones' (watched this weekend with Gus!) goblet :o) I love the lustre on them.

  3. Hi Judy, thanks so much, yes I am doing the happy dance, about time I think. I have so many ideas for these Cone 6 glazes. I was a bit aprehensive about switching to oxidation firing because I was so used to the variation in cone 10, but I think with testing and overlapping, those type of results can be achieved in oxidation firing too.

Hi Cindy, thanks, yes all that glitters is some times gold in my estimation. I am not a flashy lover, but I like how these turned out more subtle rather than flashy gold or flashy black.

  4. Awesome goblets and great looking glazes! I think those top ones would look super cool with really wonky stems.

Hi 幸運, thanks for your comment:

Not sure if this is the correct translation or not:

People are great because of their dreams, we should stick to their ideals Oh!

  10. Hi Meredith, thanks, stuff is starting to pile up in here again. Gary is becoming a nervous nelly because we are almost flooded out here and snowed out of leaving till next week due to passes being closed.

  12. Hello Linda.

Really wonderful! All of them are lovely and I like the green and black metallic goblets very much!!
They are stunning! Love the magical color. They remind me of Hagi-yaki.

  13. Hi Donna, thanks so much. yes the translation is a wonderful thought, not sure if I got it completely right or not, but if not it is a pleasant thought anyway.

Hi Sapphire, thanks so much, it seems many of my pieces have a humble quality. When I make pinched forms I really enjoy having my hands in the clay, something meditative about it. I really like working with my hands and making things with my hands.

  14. Hello Linda! I am a little behind on blogging - my excuse is a good one though. It has been warm enough here for me to work out in my pottery studio and I was racing to get as much done as I could before the weather turned too cold again. I love how your goblets turned out – not sure which set I like best! The bronze glaze you are using is gorgeous and compliments the wavy stemmed goblets beautifully! Who makes that glaze? I also like that you used the black metallic for the stem on the green goblets – very nice! Are you going to keep them?

  15. Hi Jewels, thanks so much. These are Amaco cone 5/6 glazes which come in a jar. If you get any make sure you put three coats on them. They are not like cone 10 glazes which I am more familiar with using, they didn't seem to run at all and I glazed them almost down to the very bottom of the piece with no wax. I need to call the woman who did the firing to get her firing schedule, since these came out so nice. Other colors didn't come out the way I expected. Since I'm paying for each piece individually to be bisqued and glazed fired I didn't take the time or money to do testing. I would love to do a very tall textured vase with that gold it is a really wonderful color. The black is a metallic black. I normally don't like dark glazes but these two are worth using. let me know if you try any, perhaps we can compare notes. I have so few of my really good pieces I think I will keep these till I can make some more and build up some inventory to have for myself and to show. Plus I need to get some more professional photos of these for my portfolio. thanks again.
