Tangy Shrimp Salad

Here's a quick and easy recipe for Tangy Shrimp Salad. Shred some romaine lettuce in bowls or on plates. Chop a red bell pepper and toss on top of the lettuce. Open a small can of tiny shrimp and toss on top of the lettuce and peppers. For the dressing, in a separate bowl put about 1/4 cup of ketchup, add two teaspoons of prepared horseradish, add a few dashes of hot sauce, then add in some vinegar to make the dressing thin. Drizzle the dressing over each salad, grind a generous amount of fresh black pepper over each salad and serve immediately.

As Gary and I were eating the Tangy Shrimp Salad from a paper bowl, I was wondering what type of ceramic plate the salad would look attractive on. I thought of a flat plate with a gray or black glaze and a little squiggle of lime green over the top as an accent color. I seem to be looking at food in a whole new way, wondering what shape and color plate would complement the food. How about you, do you think of glazes which will complement food? I like the plate on the left which is more square rather than oblong for a salad. An oblong plate might be good for sushi or crackers and cheese.

I had a slip decoration on these two plates but I didn't like it so I wiped it off. I thought I'd texture the plates. I looked around for something to use and my old bamboo back scratcher was lying about, so I scratched away on the diagonal, then I took the scratcher and gently hit the plates a few times randomly. I think I got this back scratcher in San Francisco in the 1970s. Now that's a tool with longevity.

I love all the oak trees around here, they are so beautiful with their curving branches and the moss and ferns growing on the limbs. If all goes well, in two more days we'll be in our new home. Ugh, moving, unpacking, arranging, rearranging, electrician to wire a kiln, etc. all necessary evils for an end result of firing the pieces I've been working over the last several months. Stay tuned for photos of the new place coming up. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

  2. can't wait so see pics of your new digs! it's funny, when i saw the pretty salad on the paper plate i though 'she needs to get in that house so she can eat on some real plates!' then you talk about plates lol. i've been thinking about plates lately too, only i need to make some for us to eat on as my son's broken most of ours. and i agree, the square one is more practical for daily use, the oblong is more for serving. try to keep the house fever under control, i think the last few days are the worst!

  4. Thanks Linda, at first i liked them, but later my daughter (the one who studies pottery as major in art school) said she don't like them... she likes better my sgraffito works, so I got confused a little, and am waiting for the end of the passover holiday to get back to the studio and think what i am going to do next after the planned fires. :-(

  5. Yummy Shrimp!
Then again you should be eating lots of shrimp where you are.
It is time for some clay dishes.
I love to eat out of bowl more than I like to eat off plates.
I have some favorite shallow chowder bowls I would use with that shrimp salad.

  6. Hi Mr. Young, thanks, sometimes potters forget to eat so if I post some food here every once in a while they hopefully won't starve. Ha!

Hi Kim, thanks, we are going the easy route in the RV since we have had so many trips to make so not having to wash dishes saves us time. I better think of making extra dishes in case of breakage when I get around to making some for us.

Hi Patti, thanks you have no idea how cramped we are and the RV bed and seats are not that great and we have been drooling over regular beds and seats. Even the cats are cooped up and have taken to running up and down the length of the RV to get their exerciase sometimes bouncing off our laps.

Hi Varda, thanks, don't give up on your technique especially those first ones you did, I really think you are on to something. Of course your sgraffito bowls are very lovely, but I also like the painted glaze ones.

Hi Meredith, thanks, this is something quick to be made if you're on the run or if someone stops by unexpectedly for lunch or a light dinner. That's why I always keep a can of shrimp in the cabinets. Notice these were in a bowl, the salad would look pretty on a plate but would probably fall all over the place.
