Tropical Tattoos

Are you shaking your head yet? This time I've been inspired by a couple of tropical tattoos. I thought both the mermaid and octopus were so wonderful I just had to use them in clay.

I don't usually go around taking photos of tattoos, but the guy who was putting up our window film was so proud of his, I asked him if he would mind if I took a photo to use in my art. Of course he agreed. He was especially proud of the mermaid since his Aunt is one of the original mermaids who swim at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park.

I just finished my slip work on the mermaid plate and the octopus platter. Now I have them placed over hump molds and they're drying in the closet.

I picked up the bisqued work I made over the last few months yesterday. They all made it through except a tiny part of pyramid seam separated slightly which I can cover with glaze. Now I'm sorting through to see which pieces I'll raku, barrel fire, or glaze. I'll be glazing all day today and then getting those fired very soon. I should have fired work to show in a week of so.

Oh, I'm making a piece in a different format also inspired by a tattoo, so check back again. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

  1. Love them! The hair on the mermaid is just great- floating.
I have been thinking along the same line of looking at what folks are putting on their bodies.
    Both mu kids have tats.
They wear their art- maybe easier then buying it for a house?!??

  2. Hi Meredith, thanks, I'm making these as a plate and a platter, but they could also be hung as art on the wall for a home. The mermaid has a story, she has her breasts covered till his children are grown and his parents pass away and then he'll have her converted to topless; I should have put that in the post but forgot - a real respectful Florida cracker family man.

  3. How FUN! I have read about the Weeki Wachee Springs -sort of legendary of times past isn't it?! Your blog post on tattoos has me wondering if tattoo designs are regional in themes, designs etc.? Tats are HUGE up here -especially with the 20 somethings.

  4. Hi Cindy, thanks, we haven't been to Weeki Wachee yet, but it started back in the 40s I think. There is definitely a lot of tropical themes here for everything, clothing, decor, etc. When I saw your post on the octopus I was already planning on making my plate and made it orange because I saw the ones you posted.

  5. Love the tattoos! And your interpretation of them. Too funny that the boobs stay covered in respect to the young & old. Florida is sure full of lots tropical imagery. It's nice to see your work changing to reflect your environment.
