Pin Cushion Jars

The idea for these tall jars was sitting in my head and I decided to make them this evening. I originally intended them both to be pin cushion jars.

Both pieces are triangular in shape. The second one was the original pin cushion idea which I sketched in my journal. The wire was supposed to come out of the top and the sides.

As I was making the jars I thought it wouldn't be a good idea to have rough wires sticking out of the top and sides, so I added the little heads at the end.

I didn't put any wires coming out the sides of the lid either. I wonder if I should add those now? Having the pin cushions with the heads isn't the same effect as my drawing. I might have to make another one with spikes of clay sticking out instead of wire. Oh I just had another idea, I'll have to work on that.

Meanwhile I changed the tile pattern for the entry to 18 inch tile instead of 12 inch tile which makes it less busy. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

  1. hi linda, i think the little balls on the end of the wires is a good solution and as always, your piece is so faithful to the drawing. i like the pattern of you tiles, what's the ETA on that project?

  2. Hi Jim, thanks, I hope the balls don't dry out too quickly and crack. the living room and dining room are all done and grouted and that was the most square footage, the rest of the house is next, should be done in about two more weeks. We've taken out the baseboards and have to sand and paint all of them for each room. It's never ending around here. then we can start slowly unpacking the bus, not sure what is in there that we need, cause we've done without it all for months, we'll sell stuff on craigslist if we don't need it.

  5. They look like they are dancing.

I like the larger floor tiles too, less busy and ads a level of elegance that 12" tiles lack IMHO.

  6. Hi Lori, thanks, they are supposed to look like they have movement, so glad you can see that in them. I have one more pattern to try for the entry, hope the tile guy doesn't kill me this am; it's with the 18 inch tiles too.

  7. oh- I like the way you have the tiles and I bet the tile guy loves you because you are so creative.
    Not bland in any way.
The jars are great- I can't wait to see what pops out of your head next!

  8. Hi Meredith, thanks, not bland, that's what I keep telling him and Gary better to have ideas than being boring. te he.

I have so many ideas in my head, one thing leads to another. Can't seem to get corelite octagon shelves here in Florida, may have to order them from Minnesotta Clay, shipping is going to kill me. Oh, well in the long run lighter weight will be better.

  10. Hi Kari, thanks so much for your encouragement, it means a lot to me. Yes I will post photos after they are glazed. Now that I am settled in, I really need to think ahead of time about glazing each piece and how it will look and once I settle on a form that looks good and the glaze is good I need to make more of that form. Of course there are test tiles. I've actually been making lots of test tiles. Trying four different clays and so many glazes it makes it cumbersome to get a handle on it all of the tests.

  11. Linda I really like your pin cushion jars!! I like how you are using additional materials to compliment your designs -the jars appear to be dancing and have nice movement to their shape :o)

  12. Hi Cindy, thanks, I really appreciate your input. It's kind of fun adding another dimension to the clay. I know a little bit of how you must feel working with your metal sculptures. I was hoping for some movement with these. Hope the wire works out in the firing. I know others have used it just not sure about how far to insert it into the clay etc. We shall see.

  15. turquoisemoon, thanks so much about the jars, I hope they survive the rigors of firing.

Hi floridacracker, thanks so much, love your blog, thought of you today when I saw someone towing a kayak with a motorcycle with a ice chest on 19 near ceder key. bigger is better when laying tile less busy I think.
