3800 Steps

Last night it seemed like it was taking me forever to move my greenware from one side of the house to the other so the tile can be laid in the studio this morning. Of course I don't trust anyone else to help me move the greenware. I decided to do a little math.

Moving my greenware from one side of the house takes 38 steps and I made 50 trips. Each trip I took twice. Once to take the piece out of the studio closet and bring it to the master bedroom closet and then return for the next trip. Lets see 38 times two, times 50, equals 3800 steps. Check it out, we're lucky to have a cedar lined closet.

Then I started thinking that's probably how many steps I'll need to make to load the kiln for the bisque firing. Then another 3800 to unload, then another 3800 to load the glaze, then another 3800 to unload the glaze. I didn't count the couple of detours around the cats lying on the floor.

Of course, now that I'm back in the studio all the cats are taking cat naps. Nor did I count the trips to the frig to get some ice water with a splash of cranberry juice. The previous owners of this house left the glass the cranberry splash is in. I might do a whole post on the glass they left here, some are quite interesting and inspirational.

Oh I just realized I need to unload the hall closet too since the tile needs to be laid in there too. So there will be a few more steps moving more greenware. Thank goodness I don't have as many greenware pieces in that closet; it's mostly finished work. I learned there's many steps needed to make ceramics.

  4. Hi Donna, thanks, that's a good idea, with the tile floor that would work. I know some potters have all one level and rolling carts and they can move their work on the carts, but I have two doors and a step to get to the kiln so it won't work for me.

  5. Potters don't need a gym membership or an exercise program. You've just confirmed this.

  6. Oh Linda -- I just did the -move everything to tile exercise- and don't forget you get to put it all back when they are finished! It really helped me clean & organize -- and get some exercise! I know you'll love having a new floor!

  7. you sure did get lots of exercise and you will be so lucky to have a new tile floor.
so funny that you mentioned water with a splash of cranberry juice... i just started doing that this week! i was getting tired of drinking plain water but the juice is so sweet, high in calories and not very thirst quenching on it's own... but with water and a little lime or lemon it is delicious!
anxious to see the other cool glasses you inherited with your new home!

  8. I would have to get a cart that would fit through the doors and go up and down the step. lol I'm sure it will all be worth it, to get the new floor. Have a great weekend!

  10. hi Linda- you should have your own stepping program for exercise program-
we work across from our house and the sales -gallery is between the two and off to the left of the house- we get our walking in daily because no matter what we need it is in the wrong place- Right now the tile drawing is in the house- if I have a question about the drawing-off to the house-and back-bathromm- house and back-lunch-house and back-computer-basement of house and back...good for us!
If we have a customer-gallery and back.
leave a tool you had in your hand when you went to see customer-gallery and back.......keeps us young!

  11. Hi Lori, thanks, you are so right about the gym and besides with all there is to do and explore with clay how has time for the gym. Ha.

Hi Judy, thanks, I am getting in some cleaning and organizing and rethinking how I had stuff arranged in here. I may just leave the stuff in that other closet and put it directly in the kiln to bisque. Going to do a test fire as soon as tropical storm Bonnie goes by.

Hi Marguerite, thanks, I may just have to get a cart and a ramp I can push up and down the step, you have given me the idea to explore that - it is a very good idea. Thanks so much.

Hi Meredith, thanks, I used to think I walked a lot at the old place because of the size of the property, but it seems it doesn't matter how small or big the steps just keep multiplying and isn't it true the thing you need is always somewhere else. Once I get the tile in here I'll do another post showing my studio organization. I have a rolling chair which I scoot around on in here and that helps the getting up and down some anyway.

  12. Hi Michele, thanks, the cranberry juice I am using is the stuff without any sugar in it at all it is full strength and really bitter if you drink it straight, so I just fill a glass with ice water and pour a little of it in the glass to color it and don't add anything, so I am not getting any sugar at all. It isn't cheap, but since I use so little it doesn't cost that much. I like those green teas, but the caffeine keeps me awake so the cranberry is better and that tangyness is a thirst quencher.

  13. Oh Michele, just talking about the cranberry has made me thirsty, I am going to make myself a tall one right now. ha.

  14. ...and then there's searching for the tool that has fallen behind the concrete block or whatever else it is and you think you left it in the showroom, so it's a back-and-forth workshop-showroom-workshop-showroom until you decide to get on your knees this time and really look under and around your wheel

  15. Oh Michael, thanks, you are so right, things do have legs and seem to disappear right when you seem to need them.
