Ain't She Sweet

Came across my high school graduation photo sorting for the yard sale this weekend. Was feeling a little melancholy at my former youthful look, then a song came to mind, "I ask you confidentially, ain't she sweet, see her walking down the street, ain't she sweet". After listening to the song, I was feeling chipper again. Ah, the innocence and beauty of youth.

Been working on bowl details, these small ones are to go with a the large one I made recently. What do you think, do you like sets of pottery? Like a large serving bowl and four small bowls to match? I like making them and they stack nicely.

You probably can't see it, but I used two texture tools, a finger nail brush and a steel wool pad and pounded them lightly and randomly into the clay. Then I apply the blue slip, then the coral slip, then I slip on the black flowers. I apply the slip on wet clay and let each layer dry a bit before adding the next layer.

By the time I place the forms over a hump mold, the clay has firmed up to a soft and supple leather hard. I used two small round cutouts for the foot and add the feet at the end. These feet are much better than my previous hand scribed ones.

I've been trying to pay closer attention to the bottom as well as the top surface of plates and bowls. I was going to add one small black flower on the back but it slipped my mind (no pun intended). Ha! Oh gee, forgot to sign my name, I usually sign in the middle of the foot. I'll have to use an oxide pencil I guess. More after the yard sale this weekend.

  1. Great picture of you -- I remember that hairdo! Really hard to accomplish with curly hair in hot humid GA - lol!

    Love your slipped bowls.

  2. The bowls are beautiful, and so are you. As they say, "The eyes have it," and yours are no exception.

  3. Hi Judy, thanks, my hair was always so easy to curl and would hold the flip all day long, of course that was in the dry climate of California at the time. I hope I can get a clear glaze that looks good on my recent work. I hate to think of trying to refire.

Hi Teresa, thanks, I showed Gary the photo and said jeepers look at how pretty I was back then and he said you're still pretty, but I wish you had your long hair back. I don't think my old sagging face would look good with long hair any longer, men always seem to like long hair, though.

  6. Great picture Linda. Teachers at my school were asked to bring in thier high school pictures for the the year book. The pictures didn't make it in. And I got my picture back, then dropped it on the way out the door one day. My picture floated around the Freshman hall for a couple of days. I kept hearing about it from the kids. "Mrs. Norman you were so young." Of course I was!!! But when it made it back to me, the picture was still in perfect shape. I was happy I didn't have black teeth and beard.

  8. Hi Connie, thanks, that is amazing you got your photo back and it was still intact, those kids were so good. My Gary has the telephone books and newspapers with blacked out teeth and beards and sometimes glasses around here. Ha.

  9. I really like the bowl sets - a pattern repeated always looks more interesting than on a single piece somehow. Your hair was beyond amazing! Looks so perfect.

  10. Hi Amber, thanks, yeah I was thinking that too, a repeated pattern, plus my idea was that if I have a set I can perhaps entice someone into spending a little more money than they normally would for just a single piece. I can't believe I had hair like that is was so long ago. I think I rolled it with toilet paper rollers or some of those big ones or something back then. I know I once had some of those hot rollers back then too, the ones you plug in and they heat up, just remembered those. Ha!
