Stemmed Mug

Even though I've said I don't make mugs, I made this stemmed mug today. I had a good time pinching the form, so I'm making more. The handle fits my hand well and there's a little indentation at the top for the thumb to rest.

Here's one more I just made. Both are a generous cafe au lait size with a stem. This one's a little taller in the stem, but smaller in the cup. Oh well, no two alike here. I like the first one better than the second one. I might take measurements of the first one. Funny how small changes can make a big difference in the look of a piece.

I'm thinking of making a few tea bowls and soup bowls with handles. Must be the cold weather which prods me to make mugs and bowls. I can almost feel the warmth coming from a mug or bowl as I make it. Can't wait to fire these.

  1. Is there any thing special you have to do to make your products food and drink safe? I'll check back.

  2. These remind me of the cups my friend Laura makes. She uses commercial glazes and decals and creates little works of art on them. I have two and they are so fun to drink out of.

  3. What's nice about the stem is that it encourages wrapping your hands around the underside of the cup which warms the hands and keeps the beverage warm longer. Nice design.

  4. Lovely mugs! They could be His and Hers. I really love the designs on them. Have a great weekend!

  5. Hi Patti, thanks, yes make sure the chemicals used in the glazes aren't toxic and fire to vitrification. Also there are companies where one can send their pottery to have it tested for food safety.

Hi Tracey, thanks, Gary said we should be drinking out of our own ceramic pieces so I decided to make some more. I do want to try the decals, perhaps real soon, I have lots of drawings which would be perfect on mugs and plates.

Hi Lori, thanks, yes with this cold weather putting your hands around a warm cup would be just the ticket.

Hi Marguerite, thanks, I was thinking the same thing, and what a great marketing idea, calling them his and hers mugs. I'm gonna use that. Could also say mine and yours, or yours and mine, etc.
