Japan Quake & Butterflies

Just as I discovered these botanical butterfly prints yesterday I learned of the devastating earthquake in Japan and then the tsunami. I am reminded of how life can change in a moments time, so quickly, much like the life of a butterfly. I hope healing from the devastation and loss comes with bits of beauty and peace for all those affected.

These ten butterfly botanicals were in my photography portfolio from years ago. I had forgotten I stored them there for safekeeping. The prints are 9 x 12 inches, suitable for framing. I've taken a digital photo through plastic of each one so the visual quality suffers a bit as you see them here. The use of colors and contrasts in these prints were inspiring to me.

I decided to paint flowers with different colors of slip on a tile background of my black clay. Then I attached a sculpted butterfly sprig.

Here's another tile using the same technique.

I have one more tile cut so I better get busy before the clay gets too dry.

  1. What gorgeous botanical prints. I love them. I can see why they inspire you. Some of these would make great fabric for throw pillows. Your creativity is always so inspiring. These also remind me of that saying about the fluttering of a butterflies wings setting off a tsunami.... It's really about how everything is connected. We are Japan. Japan is us. thank you for starting my day with these beautiful prints. It's perfect.

  2. Hi Teresa, thanks, I never heard the saying about the fluttering of butterflies setting off a tsunami. I once recovered a chair with botanical fabric, these remind me of that chair which I wish I still had. I think throw pillows are a good way to add a pop of color or an unusual uniqueness to a decor. Have a good day.

  4. We are often just one breath away from catastrophe. Normal is so fragile.
