Mail Art and White Rabbit

Did you remember to say "white rabbit" this morning? If you don't know what I'm talking about you can read about the white rabbit day challenge here. Basically you're supposed to say white rabbit on the first day of the month the minute you awaken in the morning. Supposedly you'll have good luck all month long if you remember to say white rabbit.

A few days after I posted about the challenge last month, I received this beautiful handmade card in the mail from my blogging friend Barbara, of The Inquisitive Magpie. Thanks so much Barbara for the beautiful double white rabbit card. Barbara also mentioned to me about mail art. I had heard the term before, but really know very little about it. Apparently mail art was popularized in the 1960s by Ray Johnson.

Would you like to exchange mail art? If so please email me your mailing address and I'll do the same to you and we can exchange mail art. Now you don't have to be an artist to participate, anything goes with mail art. You could send a post card, a note card, a short note, a cartoon, anything you wish which you consider art. I think sending or receiving something in the mail is a way to bring more joy into the world. Maybe it's just me but there's something wonderful and romantic about getting some snail mail. I wish I had an address of someone in Japan I'd like to send them something in the mail.

I have to confess I wouldn't have remembered to say white rabbit this month, but I was given three signs prompting me to remember. Yesterday afternoon I happened to glance out the window and I saw a bunny rabbit. This is the first time this year I have seen the rabbit. Normally the rabbit scurries across the yard and runs into the woods ensuring he escapes the eye of predators like hawks or eagles. But this time he hesitated at the edge of the woods as if waiting for me to get a good look at him. I admit I looked long and hard out the window, but I didn't think of white rabbit at the time. Nor did I remember that the next day would be the first of the month.

Then I got up very early this morning, said nothing, went to the computer, and made up an etsy treasury for the Florida Etsy Street Team, titled Into the Pink with Spring Green Teamfest. I saw a vintage rabbit figurine with two rabbits standing in front of a basket and put that on the first line of the treasury. But still I didn't remember to say white rabbit.

Finally I noticed someone had looked at my previous post of about white rabbit and then I remembered and said white rabbit. Sometimes I'm a little dense I guess. Often subtle hints go right over my head. So if you want to tell me something just let me know, because I'll probably miss the point if it's a hint.

I wasn't even going to post today and here I've almost written a book. I had two things happen yesterday that were good luck but I'll tell you tomorrow because this post is much too long already, so please come back then. Happy April Fools' Day and White Rabbit Day to you all. I hope you'd like to exchange mail art. Please let me know and thanks for your comments.

  4. Didn't remember to say "white rabbit"...oh well. And I love Ray Johnson and his mail art! I first learned about him through a documentary called (coincidently enough) "How to Draw a Bunny." Good documentary about a very interesting person. He also did some very nice collage and mixed media pieces.
Mail art is kind of a stripped down version of that, I think. And I really like the idea of sending random acts of art to random people. I also like random acts of art in public spaces; unfortunately the authorities call that "grafitti."

  6. Hi Meredith, thanks, I changed the font way back and Amy said she thought this was hard to read, maybe I should try one more, yeah we need some good luck too.

Hi Patti, thanks, I hope it works too, I think the only way to remember is to put a reminder by your bed the night before and then wake up and have the reminder sitting right there and reading it and then saying it out loud.

Hi Mary, thanks, you have a good month too.

Hi Rob, thanks, How to Draw A Bunny, wonder if it is around somewhere, random art, yeah that's kind of what mail art is, you send something to someone when they least expect it. and in turn get something when you least expect it. Rob I saw someone was leaving art, not graffiti in public places with a note saying it was free for the taking, it was pottery too, they left a tile or cup on a window sill or in the branch of a tree, might be fun to do, fun for the person leaving it wondering who would pick it up and keep it. Kind of like finding a bottle in the sea with a message in it from another country years later. Fun and happy stuff.

Hi Amy, thanks, well I am going to find another font to see if it is better, I want all the readers to read with ease, yes please send the pics of the teabowls, they are wonderful, love your shinos.
