Cart Before the Horse

See the wheels, they were going to be textured flowers. Except I noticed they looked like wheels. So I said to myself "Hum, maybe a flower cart". I started in without a firm idea in my head or a pattern. Sometimes it's better to try something without thinking, because if I think about it I may not have the courage to try. So today I put the cart before the horse.

Notice the official building helpers I use, sponges and paper towel rolls. This cart is wobbly, too square, and nothing like a flower cart. It reminds me of those old timey circus animal cages. The bottom looks like a go cart, and the handle like a wagon handle. Well, it is a cart and I am amazed I could get those thinner-than-pencil uprights to stand up even if they are askew. I was actually able to carry it in the other room, very slowly and carefully, and put it in the drying closet.
I've googled "wooden flower cart" and now I have plenty of ideas for flower carts. Of course I'll have to make more flowers to put in the flower cart. Maybe some mini flower pots would look good in the cart.

Hey, Meredith, Michele, and Tracey, here's my contribution to the farm animal ornaments. My cow is press molded and painted with slip. I'll bet the black slip turns blue. A blue cow, maybe I'm on to something there. Gary said I should make farm animals and Harley's and I'd be rich, however I'm not motivated to make them. So instead, stay tuned for more flowers and flower carts coming up soon.

  1. blue's the thing this week... i did a couple of my pig banks in the blue sponge ware tradition. personally i am not fond of sponge ware but it always sells.

that was tricky work getting that cart to stand up!

  2. Great job, Linda! Your cart reminded me of the Gypsy carts I've seen in Eastern Europe. And, I agree with Gary about the cows...I hauled back a cow from Austria - has an oopening on top to pour milk in; milk comes out thru the mouth for coffee. Don't know why, but I have this thing for cows. They're just cool!

  3. Hi Michele, thanks, I have never tried the sponge ware technique, might have to try that with one of my flowers.

Hi Kittie, thanks, I remember your telling about that cow before and it sounded so cool. I guess farm animals are cool, perhaps it harkens back to my childhood and reading about farm animals, they were some how romantisized in books and then there are the cartoons where they are given human characteristics. Oh well.

  4. cute! Tell Gery if he could sell burgers and ice cream he would be rich (see my blog today) that seemed to be the only thing selling at the festival I did this weekend!

  5. Hi Tracey, thanks, yeah American's seem to eat a lot of burgers, fries and ice cream, we can't believe it when we drive by McDonalds and see all the lines. When we used to go to car shows we always threatened to become food vendors because they were the ones who made all the money, oh well.

  7. You are really clever. This doesn't look as easy to do as you make it sound. I hope you had a great Mother's Day. Blessings...Mary

  8. Hi Jim, thanks, I wish I would have put it on a flat tile to move it, 'cause now I am wondering how I will carry it with the handle sticking out like that, we shall see.

  9. Hi Mary, thanks, no, it really wasn't that easy, all those uprights had to stand up at the same time till I put the ones across the top of them. Now that I know I can do it, hopefully I can perfect the look and style of it.

  10. Love all the creative ways you are keeping your cart steady for the kiln. Lots of American ingenuity there.
