Photo Opportunities

Oops, I was going to talk about photo opportunities for art. But I couldn't resist showing you this photo of Gary reading with our cat, Betty, nearby. She loves to sit close no matter where we are. Gary said, "Is the whole world going to see this photo?" I said "No, just those reading my blog". Ha!

In my last post Charlene commented about how nice my wall sculptures look displayed as they would appear in someones home. That got me thinking how I'm missing photo opportunities for my art. Here's my sailboat sculpture sitting with some driftwood, a candle, and some shells on an entry table. Oh I could have lit the candle, next time.

Here's a close up of my miniature flower bowl.

Here's my painting on the wall in a dining room.

I need to remember I can temporarily move things and take a quick photo. Here's my gold mug on a bedside table. Just where it might be if I had a cup of tea while reading. Below is my Floating Flowers Bowl beside a different lamp. There are lots of fellow bloggers who have great photos, like my friend Amy, check out the header photo of her two tea bowls taken out of doors, awesome.

Anyway you get the picture, no pun intended. There are lots of opportunities to take photos of art in unique settings. I could even take my wall sculptures down to the beach for an on location photo shoot. I just have to remember to be creative in my photo taking.

How about you, if you're purchasing art on line or from a magazine, what usually catches your eye besides the art. Is it the way it's photographed? Does a particular setting appeal to you? How do you like to see art photographed? This post is part of artists in blogland show and tell Saturday. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Hello Linda:
Gary need not worry for it is a most wonderful photograph of both him and Betty which we enlarged in order, being rather myopic, to see all more clearly!

Your Floating Flowers Bowl is most attractive and looks so good where you have positioned it for the image.

  4. Hi Jane and Lance, thanks, he will be mortified you blew up the photo, I think it's out of focus anyway, but I wanted to capture the lighting with him and the cat reading ! Thanks about the bowl.

Hi Tracey, thanks, that last lamp is one of a pair, second hand I bought from a woman who collects art nouveau. The square one is walmart or maybe Target from years ago believe it or not.

I have another set I got years ago at an upscale second hand store I'll post about soon and you would love them they are three way with square ceramic bases that are white opaque which has a small light, super mood lighting we have in the master bedroom. I painted the cheap shades a medium blue to go with the photos and bed spread colors we have here in Florida, they turned out cool.

  5. Hi Joni, thanks, I removed what I usually have in these places just to take the photos because I usually just take the art work alone without any props and I think the props help make the work seem more liveable and usable.

Gary really isn't shy, if he took one of me in bed reading I'd be mortified. Ha.

  9. Hi Meredith, thanks, hope you remembered, I did, but Gary didn't. Gary loves to read and he actually found a Clive Cussler book he hasn't read at the library. Ha. He is glued to it.

  10. i agree that for sales it is nice to have a photo of the artwork as it would be displayed in someone's home. when i do photos for etsy, ideally i would like a couple of "studio shots" with a backdrop and lighting to show details and then some natural light pictures of pots in use or on display. notice i say "ideally"... the reality is i don't always have the time for the whole backdrop set up thing!
and yes, you do have some cool lamps.

Hi Gigi, thanks, wow that took longer than I expected to arrive, so glad you like it, the leaf can be hung from a window or where ever.

Hi Tracey, thanks, I sometimes wish I had one white wall to take photos, I may have to rig something up, we have only Florida colors, Ha.

  18. Hi Natasha, thanks, I wish I still had that painting. I made it specially for that space in the dining room so it would look like we were dining by the ocean. I think it was 50 by 60 inches with a large painted metallic silver border.
