Architectural Forms

Of all the things I make in clay I get the most satisfaction and I'm the most challenged by making architectural forms. I was going to make a rustic free form sculpture; I've got some driftwood that's been hanging around for eons waiting for me to do some mixed media pieces. But some how this tall modern colorful form emerged. Perhaps I was influenced by the photo of the building in Gainsville in the previous post. I was even going to put a moat around the bottom thinking I'd melt glass in it, but it was late and I needed to make dinner, so I'll save that idea for another piece.

I think the orange line on the far right should extend a little further up and I'm not sure about the curvy top. I meant for it to be straight lines but I didn't accentuate that aspect. Perhaps I can go back and correct that now if the clay is still soft enough. Too late, but I did touch up the underglaze and added a row of dots going straight up vertical. This piece is about 12 inches tall and 5.5 inches square.

Earlier in the day I picked a few sycamore leaves and made quite a few of these leaf platters. The sycamore leaves are flat on the ends and I thought the platters needed a handle. These leaves are about 12 inches across at the widest part.

Not sure if either of these works. Maybe if I used two smaller leaves instead of one small leaf. Oh I know, I could put two leaves end to end. I'll have to make one like that tomorrow. It's difficult to see in the photo but I've got them propped with sponges to keep the points on the leaves curved up. I may search out some other leaves without the flat end something more oval that lends itself to a platter shape. Up next another fish recipe and a strange fixture you might be able to identify and help me repurpose. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  5. Interesting how your art sometimes directs you. That happens to me when I write, often ending up somewhere I hadn't thought about.
    Really like that first one.

  7. Hi Margaret, thanks, I like strong deco on the outside of clay shapes sometimes. I've been craving a bit of color so it's going on the pots. Ha.

Hi Rubye, thanks, now to decide how to glaze these when they are ready.

Hi Marguerite, thanks, something a little different to keep my curiosity up. Ha.

Hi Patti, thanks, you know that happens to me when I am writing too I intend one think but as I start typing something else comes to me. It is fun.

Hi Anna, thanks, I am trying to explore the unusual use of color to push myself a little outside my normal bounds.
