Spring Squall

We had a Spring squall but it was brief. The clouds were spectacular to see, rising quickly, turning dark, dropping a touch of rain, then disappearing.

The persimmon is leafing out and there's signs of new growth everywhere.

While checking on my vegetables I noticed this cottontail was busy munching a small patch of grass. He kept eating while I took his photo. I could see his mouth nibbling the taller blades.

My raised garden beds are planted with herbs of marjoram, oregano, lemon balm, lemon verbena, rosemary, and lavender. I'm hoping the herbs soften the concrete block by growing over the edges. I also planted some catnip for my three cats. I'm still looking for some thyme.

Among the herbs I interspersed lots of tomatoes, basil and peppers. The radish and lettuce are almost ready, but the snow peas never did much of anything. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Hello Linda:
This really is the most wonderful time of the year with new growth to be seen everywhere. We very much hope that your friendly rabbit does not have access to your kitchen garden, leaping those walls and literally having a field day.

  2. Hi Jane and Lance, thanks, I hope he doesn't jump up there either. As the season goes on I'll be putting some tomato cages in and hopefully that will be a small deterrent to his jumping up there. Right now the grass and wildflowers are fresh so he is, I think, content below.

  3. Your garden is looking great. I put kneel boards (2x10 painted red) over the blocks on the long side and planted Dianthus in the holes in the end. They grow well there, just need extra care watering for in essence they are container plants.

  4. Hi Patti, thanks, I love Dianthus, is your's the creeping kind or tall? I like the variety called Cottage Pinks which has a blue grey foliage when it isn't in bloom which adds interest the rest of the year. Ideally I'd like to have a top cap of some type of flat concrete but don't want to spend the money, maybe some day. When I lived in Arkansas I had some raised bed herb gardens made with split faced block and top caps which looks really nice but these block we got for free so beggars can't be choosers. Ha.

  8. Hi Elaine, thanks so much about the teapot, I really should make more, that one sold in a show in North Carolina a couple of years ago and I loved how the glazes dripped down every so wonderfully. Yes to me Spring is the best time of the year I think.
