True Colors

I like to take photos of my pottery showing them in use. Several days ago I was eating a mango and thought  the slices might look nice photographed on my vine dishes.

By using a contrasting prop color I noticed these dishes seem to show their true colors. There's something about how the camera's eye sees the color and something about how my eye sees the color when it's viewed next to the contrasting color.

After I took the photos I had a nice snack of the mango with a squeeze of lime. The sour lime juice seemed to enhance the sweet flavor of the lime. My camera is buried in the car so I'll post photos from the grand opening later. These dishes flew off the shelf so I plan to make more of them in more colors and sizes. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. That's a great way to show work in use. You're right...the mango makes a beautiful contrast with the glazes. So you post pictures of work in use when you sell? Sometimes the customer needs a little nudge.
    Glad the opening went well.

  3. Hi Suzi, thanks, I was going to post these in my etsy shop but I sold these pieces so now I have to make more, but I have the photos, people do need a little nudge and pots in use really does helps sales.

Hi Michele, thanks, yeah I thought the colors would look good for a photograph and then I tried the lime on the mango and it tasted good, happy accident. Ha.

  5. What a great idea to set off the plates. Two fold, you got to eat the props. Win/win.

  6. Hi Meredith, thanks, these stack nicely to take to shows and stack nicely in the cabinet. I'm beginning to see the benefits of making the same form. And the more I make, the more I improve in my making techniques, sometimes I am a slow learner. Ha.

Hi Patti, thanks, yeah, it really was a win, win and they were delicious.

  7. Nice photos :) That mango sure caught my eye! I love mango and this one looks perfectly ripe.

I have mixed feelings about props. They help distinguish your item from the masses, but they can also over shadow your work. There needs to be a good balance.

  8. Hi Cindy, thanks, you bring up a good point, yesterday I had some potpourri in my leaf platters and they looked at them but they didn't purchase them and a couple of people even admired the potpourri which I wasn't selling, so next time I will minimize that. The props are eye catching initially in photos of masses of products on etsy pages but then the pottery isn't the focus. Maybe I can hold the pottery in my hand with a colorful glove or something or stick with a prop sitting next to the item instead of on top of it.
