Bamboo Plate

Today I carved on a plate which I think will work with the three glazes I picked out. I also worked on a few other pieces, more about those later.

I've carved a bamboo drawing into a plate and then made a raised rim.

I think there is just enough carving to pick up the glaze colors without it being too busy. Of course after looking at these photos of the bamboo I'd love the do some slip deco of some bamboo.

I'm not sure about the rim, it looks a little big for the plate and the rounded square may not be quite right. I'll try a few more shapes today. I took the bamboo photos at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. bamboo is so cool and it's imagery works well with pottery. we have bamboo in the yard but have to keep it cut down... it wreaks havoc on septic systems!

  2. The carving looks great, you can always cut down the rim before it gets too dry.

  3. I like your bamboo plate and its shape. The round outer rim softens the verticals of the bamboo carving. Love the beautiful bamboo photos, too.

  5. Hi Michele, thanks, I am like you I never tire of looking at bamboo, so simple, so calming. Careful of that septic system, can be expensive to repair, the roots are traveling underground you know.

Hi Lori, thanks, I never seem to do well cutting things down when they are dry, I always mess them up, next one.

Hi Charlene, thanks, it will probably look different once I fire it, I'll wait to see.

Hi Sherry, thanks, I'll be sure to post a photo.

  6. Sherry, for some reason I can't get on your blog any more, it says your blog is open to invited guests only, so I don't know if you changed something or not, but that's the reason I haven't visited your blog.
