Pink Porgie

It was about time for another recipe, don't you think? The latest local fish we tried is pink porgie which I served with some fresh tomatoes and brown rice.

I served the fish on the new plates I made recently. I had the lavender floral plate and Gary had the lime vine plate, how cool is that. I can't wait to make more plates so I can have a whole set for myself. These are the plates I made thicker so they didn't warp in the firing.

I sauteed ginger and garlic and then added the fish. Meanwhile I chopped up some fresh basil out of my garden and when I turned the fish over I added the basil and some dried mint. This fish is sweet, light and mild, so just about any spice or herb you add will enhance the flavor.

As I looked at these plates I was thinking a more minimalist style of plate would be more up my alley than these highly textured vine and floral plates. Perhaps a little less flowery looking. I guess I was just happy to have finally made some dinner plates that didn't warp. Gee is that a contradiction? I made plates which I think look nice, and lots of other folks like, but they aren't a style I would choose for my own dinnerware. I wonder if there are other potters who make a style of dinnerware they wouldn't generally use themselves. Can I design a style of plate which I would choose to use in my home. I think so.

When I originally posted these test tiles, Ron asked me which ones I liked. I said I mostly like the speckled ones but many times I found the public liked the non speckled colors. Can I design a plate that I like and others like too? I think I can. I have several colors picked out from the test tiles above and a few ideas of shapes and textures of a plate I would design for myself. Stay tuned for more about designing a plate. This post is part of the Mud Colony what's happening in the studio. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. I know what you mean about making plates and choosing the ones you want to eat from yourself. I have some that I decided I didn't want to sell just because I do like the feel of eating off of them...and I don't make any more in that style. Probably because the cupboard is already full! I love your carved ones but they might be best for serving things, in my opinion.

  5. The thing pulling me in ...the tomato. I've been seeing yucky hot house barely pinkish red ones.

  6. Mmmmm the floral plate with chocolate cake, I think that Charlene has a great idea there! Those look really useful test tiles, and I do like the speckled ones best... So hard to please the public, I am reminded of a quote by the painter John Singer Sargent that "a portrait is a painting with something wrong with the mouth!"

  8. Hi Barbara, thanks, the style is a little too flowery for my taste and decor style now, in the past I had all antiques and these look more victorian style to me.

Hi Gigi, thanks, I'll send you an email perhaps they aren't as expensive as you think.

Hi Lori, thanks, I do keep a lot, but then I sell it and make more. Ha.

Hi Charlene, thanks, the lavender really does make things pop on it.

Hi Mary, thanks, I am so lucky to have a good produce market near me. The tomato does look good against the colors of the plates I think.

Hi Peter, thanks, and probably how you hold your mouth determines whether the item looks good or not. Ha.

Hi Michele, thanks, stay tuned for more fish recipes coming soon.
