Tropical Homemade Ice Cream

We splurged on a homemade ice cream maker because we both like ice cream and don't like all the unhealthy ingredients in most store bought ice cream. Some of the unhealthy ingredients can be artificial flavorings, emulsifiers, propylene glycol (also used in antifreeze), glycerin, sodium carboxyl methylcellulose, monoglycerides, diglycerides, disodium phosphates, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, polysorbate 80, and diocltyl sodium sulfosuccinate. I won't get into how these ingredients can harm you. Since we don't drink sodas or eat any other sweets, we figured homemade ice cream every once in a while would be OK.

I made up a batch of vanilla ice cream with real vanilla extract and added chopped up pineapple and coconut, ice cream with a tropical flair. When the mixture became thick and cooled down I put the container in the refrigerator to get firmer.

Meanwhile I started thinking if I was going to go to all that trouble to make homemade ice cream, I should have some handmade ceramic ice cream dishes to put the ice cream in.

I was inspired by the ice cream maker container and decided to make a waffle cone style ice cream dish. I rolled out a slab of clay and scored it into a grid.

I cut out a paper template and cut out two ice cream bowls. I left those and the left over clay firm up.

I wanted a ice cream dish with a stem, but the first one I made just wasn't quite right. Sometimes I make a piece without thinking ahead and have to do a bit of trial and error to see what I come up with.

That was the case this time. The stem was too tall for an ice cream dish. So I took it apart and decided to try something a little different. The next one is what I quickly came up with before all the clay was too firm to work.

I'd like the stems to flow smoothly into the piece above. I'd also like the edges of the cone to look more like a waffle cone. The grid pattern could also be closer together. I'll try making a template with the stem and the body all one piece. Oh by the way the tropical homemade ice cream was delicious. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  3. Hi Meredith, thanks, we were just watching Dr Oz the other day and I couldn't believe what was in the ice cream, bet your blueberries would make some good homemade ice cream.

Hi Gigi, thanks, we were both craving some ice cream and then after we ate I was thinking, hey I need to try making some pottery ice cream dishes. I have more ideas for other dishes of course, lol.

  6. I make my own also. If I can't pronounce the ingredients, I don't want it. That really looks good.
