Two Clays Same Glaze

Here's why I like using two different clay bodies. On the left is speckled stoneware and the right is a white stoneware. All of these were fired in the same load. I used the same glaze on the left mini tiles as I did on the right ones. I'm just saying, some glazes look completely different on a different clay body, better or worse depending on your preferences. Try experimenting you never know what you might find out. Tomorrow I'll post a few results from today's glaze firing. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  2. Wow! I think both sides look good. Lots of options with two clays...I wonder what they would do if you added a color slip under?

  3. I gotta decide, eh? Ohhh, so difficult. I'm splitting hairs here because both sides are gorgeous, but maybe, by a teeny tiny bit, the left side.

  4. Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, no problem, no use deciding, just an example of the differences of two different clays.

Hi Sherry, thanks, ok now don't get me started on the slip variations, lol, ha.

Hi Kittie, thanks, no need to choose, just an example of how two clays change the look completely, I actually amazed myself. Ha.

  5. Viva la Difference :^) Some of those speckled ones give a similar appearance to a gas firing. :^)

  6. Hi Anna, thanks, yes the speckles are added into this clay to enhance the colors of the glaze when firing in oxidation to simulate a gas firing and I slow cool too which helps. Some of the colors are great, some not so great.

  7. You are expanding my knowledge all the time, which is great! From a layman's point of view, I really like the subtlety of the colours.

  9. Hi Elaine, thanks, and keep in mind they look completely different on a whole piece of pottery, kind of like picking a paint color for the wall.

Hi Gigi, thanks, yes and it's always different depending upon application and firing too.

  10. Isn't it a trip how different glazes can look on different clays? And w/ different methods of firing, too. Love it exploring this aspect of clay.
