Chocolate Cherries Wild Dewberries

What with all the kiln firings, pottery photos, deliveries, and mailings, I almost missed some important happenings right here in my own back yard. I almost missed the ripening of the first tomatoes I planted more than a month ago. Click on the photos so you can see the hairs on the stems and the speckled surface to the tomatoes. I love the look of the tomatoes before they're washed, soft and powdery looking.

The brownish red tomatoes are chocolate cherries and the golden yellow ones are yellow pears.

I've never had chocolate cherries before but they're probably the sweetest of the small cluster tomatoes I've ever had. Then I decided to walk around the yard and I discovered some wild dewberries growing. At least I think these are dewberries. I've really got to get out in the yard on a more regular basis. Oh I know why I haven't been in the yard much lately, my shin bones are still bruised. Apparently it can take a long time for them to heal so I've been taking it easy.

OK, now say the title to this post a few times. Chocolate Cherries Wild Dewberries. Is it a movie, the title to a book, the beginning of a poem. Sounds wonderful though, doesn't it?  Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  2. Hi Elna, thanks, the chocolate cherries are real sweet and not as big as other cherry tomatoes that are squish all over the place.

  5. Those tomatoes look delicious. Ours aren't ripe yet but this rain has been helping the garden grow like crazy. I'm looking forward to seeing what dishes you use the tomatoes in.

  11. I've never heard of dewberries but they look good enough to eat. My nephew once bruised his shin bone and his doctor told him those injuries can take as long as a year to heal!

  14. Congrats on the tomatoes! Used to eat tomatoes straight out of the garden when I was a child... when they still had a bit of of dirt on them at times. Yummy!

  15. Hi Lori, thanks, most times I just eat the tomatoes plain unless I have too many. Years ago I used to can 30 quarts of homegrown tomatoes a year and make dishes with my own canned tomatoes which were delicious.

Hi Michele, thanks, we have lots of wild flowers growing in the yard, I missed some blue ones I wanted to show everyone, darn.

Hi Barbara, thanks, I got the plant at home depot and they were starts from Bonnie plant farm which supplies a lot of the big box stores with vegetable plants, I always look for the unusual varieties to plant.

Hi Joanne, thanks, they were new to me too, and glad I got them

Hi Gigi, thanks, I was kind of hoping they tasted like chocolate, but I think that refers to their color, maybe they'd be good dipped in chocolate, decadent hey?

Hi Marguerite, thanks, yep been a great growing season this year with no frost.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, I never heard of them either and at first I thought they were raspberries, but they aren't and they are not black berries either so I looked it up and saw that dewberries grow wild here so I think that's what they are. I hope I don't take that long to heal, yikes.

Hi Meredith, thanks, I too love home grown tomatoes of all types, each one has a different flavor.

Hi Patti, thanks, see Barbara's comment above I got them at Home depot or walmart I think.

Hi Amy, thanks, I used to do that too but with all the bird droppings and the fact that the squirrels get into the vegetable garden I'd better wash them now.

  16. Love the chocolate cherries! My tomatoes are still green. Don't have the heat and sun. We have a cherry tomato called "San Francisco Fog" that does well here. Nothing like your chocolates, though! Yours look so yummy and full of sunshine.

  17. Hi Charlene, thanks, we've been unseasonably warm this spring so I have an early start. I also have some peppers full size but not red yet. Eggplant however is not doing much yet. I used to grow tomatoes in the East Bay and canned thirty quarts a year I think I used early girl and better boy and patio tomatoes and they did pretty well and the cluster tomatoes for just eating. I even got a cantaloupe to ripen once but just one. Ha.
