Round Bottom Basket

Here's another basket I made yesterday; it's about a foot long and 4 inches high. I rounded the bottom of the basket and then added feet. When it was firming up on the form it slipped a little sideways so it wants to tip to one side. Not sure what I'll do about that. I see now I should have put feet closer to the edge. But the attachment point would have had to have been slanted. When working upside down it's hard to determine the exact angle to make the feet and where to attach them.

I put the feet so I could glaze the whole basket. But maybe I should stain the basket. Should I mix some frit in with some copper carbonate or red iron oxide and paint it on. What do you think? I'd love to see one of these baskets have that turquoise copper color as if it was made of copper metal that has achieved that aged patina over time. You know like the statue of liberty color shown above I borrowed from wikipedia. I am not sure how to achieve that color, if you have a recipe for cone 5 or 6 I'd love to know.

I see Georgies has some sculptural glazes with one called copper patina and some others that look interesting. Has anyone used them? What was your experience if so?  I guess I'll need to do some test tiles to see how they turn out beforehand. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  2. I remember seeing Martha Stewart painting some flower pots to give them that effect. It sounds like it's worth a try!

  3. it would be neat in patina type glaze. we have a turquoise that goes grayish/black in places but it's ^10 so that won't help you. i bet you can find one somewhere, i don't know anything about commercial glazes.

  4. I rarely buy commercially prepared glazes but this color looked so great I decided to try it: Laguna's Dynasty Matte Glaze, MS-259 Old Copper cone 5. Great color, but I was assured by the tech guy at my local Laguna supplier that it would be O.K. at cone 6- it ran.

  5. I adore Georgie's Copper Patina and use it often, but I almost always layer it with other glazes. Check out the "Combo Mambo" and the "Stars" pdf files on their website for some of the possibilities.

  6. PS. I live near Georgie's so get much of my clay, prepared glazes, misc chemicals and other materials and supplies from them when I'm at home in Oregon.

  7. Hi Ma Ferreira, thanks so much.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, I know there are paints to make the effect but I'd like it to be glazed so I'll give it a whirl.

Hi Michele, thanks, in my cone 10 days we have a glaze like that with the black and green but never had the recipe, it is a nice effect I think.

Hi Melissa, thanks, I've used some of Laguna's glazes and the bottle does say cone 5; when I fire my cone 6 is just barely tipped so I have been lucky so far. I'll check out that color.

Hi Growin Granny, thanks so much, I was looking at that page on Georgies and liked some of the effects I'll have to do some experimenting.
