Confetti Tower

Here's a confetti tower I'm working on. It's about fifteen inches tall. The confetti melted a little in the heat. Not really but that's what it looks like, which is what I was after. Gary said it looks fifties style or like a woman's dress. Not sure if I should put color on the top portion and if I do what color to use. Purple would be too dark, yellow too light, maybe orange or green. Hum? Normally I like a matt clear, but I think the confetti would be nice shiny. Once again I have no idea how I'll get glaze on the inside.

Here's what it looked like before I put on the confetti. I set it directly on my turntable to drizzle the confetti. Do you see where this is headed? Then I had to let the drips dry before I could move it. With cats I was really worried so I moved it to the bathroom and locked the door. Then I realized the top part might dry too much so I put a plastic bag just over that section. I finally got it in the cabinet, but I smudged the drips a little which I didn't want to do. I'll know better next time. It might be time to splurge for a hair dryer. I'd like to make a whole group of these colorful tall towers and a group with glazes too. I can usually only make one a day though, so it might be a while. This post is part of Mud Colony what's happening in the studio. Thanks for all your comments, I love hearing what you have to say.

  2. Hi Linda, thanks so much, I want the ridges of the stacked pieces to show so I'm leaving empty space between the colors applied.

  3. Oh Linda, I had to refresh my mind on Bob Turner's work, did you mean Beatrice Wood, either way I consider your comment an honor for sure.

  4. This is such a happy piece! I see it in a shiny glaze too. can your thin your glaze to a pouring consistency for the inside?

  5. Linda, I have decided to dabble in ceramics, like you. I wish I had the time to take a class, but I have to babysit my grandson. Is there a book you can recommend to me before I get started?

  6. Hi Michele, thanks, I was thinking it felt real happy too, yeah I can thin it out real thin and pour it in with a funnel and then turn it upside down to pour out.

Hi Gigi, thanks, can you take a class at a community college? I highly recommend that. or even one of those one day classes at a ceramics shop. Start out with hand building if you can since you will be successful making at least a few pieces and then will feel confident to go further. Check some books out at the library. I have a couple of good books I look up the names and do a post for you.

  7. okay, is that underglaze in the colors? guessing you could dip the whole piece into a clear glaze or pour clear glaze over the inside, right? good luck!

  9. Hi Amy, thanks, yes that is underglaze this is still green, I'll try pouring the clear over the top.

Hi Kathryn, thanks, well it's just a silly name I gave this tower because that'w what it reminded me of - lots of bits of confetti. Sometimes I'm silly. Ha.

  10. Oh, it is fun. I saw a pottery seller at my farmer's market & he was too Incisive grasp of the marketplace for me. It was all calculated. This is just fun.

  11. Oh Gigi, I like to think I more than dabble in ceramics since I've been doing it for six years and hope to make enough money to at least purchase my supplies, not sure I'll ever recover the cost of my kiln which was really expensive and just as much to fire, perhaps one of these days.

Hi Mary, thanks, I do like to have fund in my making and am glad you see the fun in the piece I have made. I think art should be fun and curious and nice to use or look at too. Ha.

  13. I love the confetti tower! I'm crazy about anything with colour but the confetti idea is very unique. I can't wait to see the series, they will be so impressive!
