How To Adjust An Etsy via Paypal Order ?

Some time ago I had an order for some oblong plates and small square plates all in different color glazes. I made extras so the buyer would have a choice of colors. I loaded them into a reserve on Etsy for the buyer to make a choice of colors for each set. Can someone please advise me how to adjust the Etsy order to reflect the color choices and how to adjust the paypal payment to reflect the lower combined shipping costs? I have no idea how to do this.

Sometimes these computer intricacies throw me for a loop. The buyer has already paid me via paypal but for all the color choices and for the higher price without combined shipping. This post is part of Mud Colony what's happening in the studio. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. hmmm not sure. i wonder if having an etsy conversation with the buyer would work to communicate about the change?

  2. Hi Amy, thanks, they already know I will change it I just don't know how to do it via paypal, perhaps there is a refund option and then I need to adjust the order on etsy to show the colors they chose.

  3. I know you can refund them the overage for shipping through paypal. I don't think you have to worry about the color selection on etsy. Did they make their selection by adding a note on their order? If not, I think as long as you have an etsy conversation record of what they chose, you should be covered.
I am not sure you can edit a sold item on etsy... now you have me wondering. I think I will search the forums or the help menu.

  4. Hi Michele, thanks so much, I figured there was a way to refund via Paypal cause I have seen others say that but I also have seen other etsy sellers say they will change their orders, but maybe they meant via paypal, now I am thinking if I put the higher price on etsy I will pay a higher fee, right? based on the higher selling price, there must be a better way to do this type of sale than the way I did it, looking in hindsight now. Ha.

  5. was the extra cost only on the shipping? etsy charges the 3.5% fee on the sale price, not on the shipping cost.

When I have done custom orders, we agreed on final pricing before I posted the reserve listing. I have e-mailed photos back and forth with glaze samples, they made their decision and I created the reserve listing. I have also jumped through these hoops only to have them decide not to place the order. That's a little frustrating.

  6. Hi Michele, thanks, well I am really learning something here, I include the shipping in the price of my items on etsy to make it easier for myself so maybe that means etsy is getting the fee for the shipping cost too from my sales.

I put the reserved listing up with photos of the choices of color before since I didn't realize I could convo photos to the person for them to choose.

I may have to change my way of listing items on etsy and next time I'll know not to put the reserve till they make their choice of colors. Glad I brought this up here because I'm learning a lot. Although I do like having the shipping included with the price of the item. Maybe I can just put the shipping as a flat rate, perhaps folks look at the price and may think it's high till they look at my listing page and see that shipping is included. I know John Bauman includes shipping in the price of his items, that's where I got the idea for that, I think Meredith does too.

  7. It looks Like The other MH has you covered- fees are just part of life when you are selling pots.
There is no way to avoid them short of standing in front of a person and accepting cash.
When you are selling be sure and take in the thoughts of fees.
I have just issued a refund through paypal.

  8. When I have a custom order I ask for the address in advance so I can get the exact shipping cost.

  9. Looks like you've got lots of good suggestions but here is one more. If I want to give the customer a choice, I'll set up 2 reserved listings and let the customer buy the one they want. After they've purchased, I just edit the remaining listing so it's no longer "reserved" but remains in the shop. Other option is I'll send photos by Etsy convo before setting up a listing and let them decide before listing. You have to reduce the size of photo just like for your shop listings though to send this way.

Even though they know better - that shipping costs exist - people dislike paying shipping, so it's not a terrible idea to included shipping in the cost of your item -- just remember to consider Etsy's cut when you price it. I charge shipping, but it doesn't always cover the whole expense unless I'm shipping very close. I have to think about this in pricing too. I'll refund shipping overages via paypal if it's a lot but that almost never happens.

Also, No - you can't edit a sold item on Etsy.

Your tower of whimsy made me smile. very fun :)

  12. Hi Meredith, thanks, I was almost confused at the other MH, then I got it, Ha. I'll have to delve into the paypal site a little further.

    Hi Melissa, thanks, good idea.

Hi Barbara, thanks, in this case the customer wanted five different colors of the same two items, and I made eight so they'd have a choice, so it was a lot of different photos. Well looks like paypal refund it is. Thanks about the tower, making smiles is good.

Hi Elna, thanks, yes the blogs are the best.

Hi Lori, thanks, I let you know how I wade through the refund.

  14. Hi Brenda, thanks, I just found out I could give the refund via paypal and it was fairly easy by clicking on the transaction, then details, then refund and typing in the refund amount.
