Poppy Bowls

Several years ago I made a poppy bowl and had someone fire it when I was living in my motorhome. The bowl had a small crack on the rim so later I smashed it. I planned on making more poppy bowls when I moved here. I did make one, but it also got a crack and again it was tossed out. Hopefully the third time is a charm; I've made two more bowls today. Here is a purple poppy bowl and below is a red poppy bowl.
These bowls are about 4 inches tall and 12 inches wide; a nice sized serving bowl. When they're dry they'll be bisque fired and then I'll add a clear glaze before the final firing. The free form shape lends itself to holding a spoon upright and also makes the bowl easier to grasp with your hand to carry to the table. Sometimes it's good to revisit work made in the past.
As I was looking at this photo with the metal spoon I thought a large ceramic spoon of the same color might be a nice complement; maybe even a fork and spoon to toss a salad. I plan to work on those today. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Nice poppy bowls! I love ceramic spoons. These bowls would make nice spoon rests at the stove too.

  2. Cool poppies! These could work in lots of sizes. I'm envisioning a nest of poppy bowls. Keep on potting!

  3. Charming. I only wish there could be more room in my cupboards to store everything I like.

  11. Hi Judy, thanks so much, I can't wait to make the spoons and forks. These are a bit big for the stove top but I can always make smaller ones.

Hi Suzi, thanks, yes a nest, but I'll have to refine the freeform a bit so they can nest together.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, I hope the colors stays the same I do like a bit of color occasionally.

Hi Elna, thanks, I'd like to make more of these in more colors.

Hi Patti, thanks, occasionally I have butter fingers so I am always thinking of the carrying aspect.

Hi Gigi, thanks, these are still greenware and I hope they make it through the firing. I'll send you a private email and I'll reserve the red one for you.

Hi Marguerite, thanks, I hope I can be successful with the spoons and forks.

Hi Lori, thanks, using the underglazes satisfies my need to 'paint' a little ha.

Hi Lori, thanks so much; I always wonder about the underglaze colors and how they'll look after the final firing with a clear over them, one can never be quite sure of what they'll look like.

Hi Michele, thanks, yes it isn't easy to make spoons, but they are fun to make and I'm thinking I might make a few with holes in the end so they might be hung up. Oh I have a few more ideas now. Ha. It's never ending with the ideas for me.

  12. Hi Joanne, thanks, seems I somehow skipped you, I know what you mean about cabinet space. I keep the stacked items on the bottom shelf and larger individual items on the upper shelves. I used to have a full size china cabinet, but not longer have one of them so much of my display stuff has to go on a bookshelf since I only have the table in the dining room. Things change as time goes by I guess.
