The Long, Long Trailer

We've gotten a ton of rain this past week and lots of thunder and lightening. Yesterday over three inches and a little less the day before and more expected today. Between storms we've been looking for a camper trailer hoping to do some traveling. So we've been gone quite a bit driving here and there looking at those advertised for sale. Our idea for getting a travel trailer is we can travel less expensively by staying in rest stops and campgrounds instead of motels. We can also take our own food and cook it instead of going to restaurants. We thought about tent camping but with Gary's bad knee and my bad back we thought a trailer would be easier on our tired bones.

Many folks nowadays don't take care of their possessions and many campers have lots of problem like major leaks or dry rot, so buyer beware. I can't tell you how many wild good chases we've been on looking for something in our price range which didn't need a ton of work. Besides camper condition issues, it's the law of supply and demand in the RV world in Florida. There is a huge demand and not enough supply. Also folks out of work or who have lost their homes have increased demand for campers and motor homes because they live in them full time.

Anyway we got back late last night with our used travel trailer. It's not really that long but any trailer reminds me of the movie The Long, Long Trailer with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. If you get a chance to rent this 1953 movie you won't be disappointed. It's a classic about the travel escapades of Lucy and Desi traveling across the country in their 1953 Mercury Monterey convertible pulling their 1953, 40 foot, New Moon trailer. Many of the mountain scenes of their trip were filmed in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California and Nevada. If you know the Sierras you'll see why pulling a trailer up the mountain roads was hair raising to say he least. Gary and I used to take four wheel drive trips in those same mountains in our Jeep and many times I thought we'd go over a cliff and never be seen again.
Early this fall we hope to take a trip up to the New England states. Gary's cousin lives in New Hampshire, his father grew up there, and his grandparents had a dairy farm there. I've never been further than New York on the Eastern seaboard and long to see Maine and Vermont and all the fall colors. Hopefully the stars will align and we can take a trip there this year. If not we plan on at least going to a few beaches in Florida we have yet to visit. So stay tuned for where we'll go on our first 'shake down' run here in Florida. Gary said he longs to feel the sand between his toes, that mean's a beach trip real soon. I really want to fire the kiln but all the storms with lightening are holding those plans at bay. Hopefully we'll get a break real soon. The photos in this post are movie scenes borrowed from the net. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  5. If you make it out west, you should stop by for a visit! We have a travel trailer, and old one but we've taken good care of it. We had the same problems finding a good one when we were in the market 10+ years ago - you are right that no one seems to take care of their things anymore!

  6. I hope you find something suitable soon, and enjoy your travelling...don't forget the camera! I must try and find a copy of the film, I used to love those two when I was young.

  8. That movei is one of our favorites...especially the rocks! As you well know, harvesting rocks was half the gardening experience when living in the Sierra and MJ and I get a huge kick out of that. FYI the scene on that mountain road was the old Tioga Pass Hwy. I can't image so little traffic on that road!

    Cheers,
    D.

Mark and I passed many this weekend on our trip to VA- some were so big and so new- expensive I bet.
Good luck on the hunt and the trip!

  10. Hope you make it to Maine, one of my favorite states. It seems around each bend in the road is a postcard view.
Good luck finding the trailer you want.

  11. I started out married life in a 24 ft trailer. A year later, we bought a New Moon 2-bedroom 40-ft--what luxury! We lived in it until my fourth kid was a year old! It was bursting at the seams by then.
