Colorful Canister & a Cat & Mouse

Here's a colorful canister or lidded jar I worked on today. It's about ten inches tall and five inches wide. I've constructed it the same as the towers stacking strips one on top of the other. There's a couple of lines of color I may touch up to make them more even. I don't want them too even, but there are a couple of red lines that are too thick. I've always fired my lids separately and have had good luck with that. What are the pros and cons are for firing lids or covers on or off the piece?

Since my cats are indoor cats now I try to keep them entertained with toys and such. I got them these cloth mice that are stuffed with catnip. Butter really likes his and carries it around and tosses it up in the air and catches it. Don't let Butter's calm stance fool you, if that was a real mouse it wouldn't stand a chance.

He used to jab his whole front leg down gopher holes at our last house and drag the gopher's out of the ground and eat them. Not to be confused with the gopher tortoise we have here. Butter is a very large cat and is all muscle; those tiles he's lying on are 18 inch tiles. This post is part of Artists in Blogland show and tell Saturday. Hope you're having a great weekend. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  2. Hi Elna, thanks, yes the mouse has a velcro opening so the catnip can be refreshed. Have good weekend to you too.

  3. Butter in certainly a big boy! Love the mouse. It would not work in my house as Winter loves catnip! Go figure!
I fire tops on the pots when I bisque. If it's a flat lid I turn it upside down so that if it sags it will have a convex arch. This is theory as I have never had a lid sag.
Like what you are doing with color....nice explorations!

  4. We've never had a catnip mouse that was not shredded sooner than later. Just ripped open to find the innards! So, now we put catnip in a little pile on the floor and let the two of them argue over who got there first.

  9. It's such fun to watch cats with catnip! I once had a cat who would go absolutely out of her mind turning somersaults in the air and leaping at the walls. I also had a cat who was totally immune to the stuff!

  10. Hi Smartcat, thanks, my cats love the catnip too but they just tend to carry the mouse around.

Hi Joanne, thanks, I haven't replaced the catnip but now just give them the catnip sprinkled on the floor like you do and let them play with the mice. Ha.

Hi Kim, thanks, I'm in a stripey mood. Ha.

Hi Linda, thanks, Butter is a sweetey, on the sidebar if you click on his photo you can read how I got him.

Hi Heather, thanks, hope it fires up nice.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, all of my cats seem to like the catnip. At my last place I had some growing but it kept getting flattened down by Butter. Ha.

  13. first time visit to your blog! Love your jars, love the irregular stripes! I too have a cat nip addict, or two in my house. Unfortunately I started giving them the catnip while I was in my craft room, now they think that when I go in there it is time to get "stoned"!
