Stacked Yunomi

It took me hours to make this yunomi. I made it just like the towers, cutting then stacking strips of clay one on top of the other. So many layers to reach almost three and half inches. Then cutting the foot, four more layers stacked together to raise the tea bowl up another half an inch.

Then hand brushing different colors of underglazes around and around and around. Then drying the underglazes with a hair dryer till the sheen was gone. (I finally splurged on that hair dryer). Then pulling my fingers through the colors to create the mottled marbled effect, which I'm really quite happy with. We shall see how the colors look after firing. I rubbed randomly, next time I might try rubbing more evenly. I want to make a tower with this same color effect; can't wait for that. So many ideas so little time.

Now I'm wondering what color to glaze the interior. Maybe a clear glaze, same as the outside, so the layers of clay can show through. I can visualize a steeped tea in the interior. Realistically though, how much can I charge for this stacked yunomi or tea bowl? Maybe I'll make another and perhaps a teapot. Been thinking about a stacked teapot but haven't had the energy nor courage to attempt it. Would be quite a challenge. This post is part of Mud Colony what's happening in the studio. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Hello Linda:
This is most attractive and very unusual. We can, though, appreciate the hours of work which must have gone into it. To make a similar 'stacked' teapot does, indeed, seem to us something of a challenge.

    Kellemes hétvégét.

  3. I love the colors blended with your finger. Yep, clear inside sounds good, to give your eyes a rest from the busy outside, then guide you to look at the outside again ...and tea will look good against clean too.

  4. Once again I have not idea what you're talking about, but it's wonderful.

  5. I've seen them sell for hundreds of dollars, some people really appreciate the work that goes into such a form.

  7. Hi Barbara, thanks, I guess if it is a clear and the clay is white then it will be white when fired. Ha. We shall see.

Hi Lori, thanks, I hope I can get even half that for my yunomi, maybe some day I'll be in that league, I can dream.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, I wonder if it is a bit messy looking I will experiment more with this though.
