Bargello

Many years ago I did needlepoint, petit point, and bargello. This bright greenware tower reminds me of a bargello pattern. The tower is about 15 x 6 x 3 and is made with stacked strips of clay. Although I didn't intend for it to look like bargello I like the effect. I'd like to explore more of these colors in a more traditional way with gradations of the same or similar colors. I have some touch up to do on the underglaze because when I moved the piece to the drying cabinet I smeared some of the colors. This post is part of the Mud Colony what's happening in the studio. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. This piece just looks happy. Textiles are a great inspiration for pottery surface decoration.

  2. Very cool. It also reminds me of a company called Nemadji. Maybe it was more local, but a colorful spray pattern in these colors.

I love how your minds works.

  3. I had not heard of the term bargello so I followed your link. I am familiar with the look but didn't know the term. Your piece definitely looks like it!

  6. Hi Teresa, thanks, I looked up Nemadji and it was a pottery. I'll have to do some more research. That pottery looks like it's thrown with the swirls in the wet clay somehow, very interesting.

  7. Hi Michele, thanks, I looked at that afghan and it does look like the bargello too. Ha. I'll have to look at more of these patterns and others as Lori suggested.

  8. Hi Gigi, thanks, did you see the ones that looked like earth, actually this is similar to those but I used more muted earth tones and on this one I used brighter darker colors and with those it looks completely different, strange how just the different colors make a difference to the whole look.

  9. While I knew Bargello, I didn't know it by that name. Thank you. And yes, the tower owes quite a lot to it. I really like the exploration of one artform in another - intentional or no. I would love to see some further work on this theme.
