A Snake Walk

 Look, it's a snake walk; out my kitchen window I spied this snake. It's a black racer.

He was probably hunting lizards and toads. As he crossed the walk I noticed he was much longer than I realized. I first spotted him in the shrub. Do you see him?

Now I know where the expression 'snake in the grass' comes from, just because they're hard to see, doesn't mean they aren't there. Careful where you walk. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Well! That would really freak me out. We have garter snakes and a few others up here and to put it mildly I do not like them. {{{{shudder}}}}

  2. Great that you were able to get some pictures of that snake. I sometimes find myself fumble around to find a camera just to find the snake has disappear.

  3. Hi Suzi, thanks, I think we'd be overrun with lizards and frogs if we didn't have snakes, they don't bother me much, now if I see a poisonous one that is another story, but still they all have their purpose.

    Hi GC, thanks, I have to be quick, I keep my camera on the kitchen counter handy for just such times. I am amazed what I see out the window here. It's a wild world out there. Ha.

  6. Do you still get startled when you see them? I do, even though I know my garden snakes are not harmful they always startle me.
    I'm assuming a racer snake is fast.

  7. Hi Elna, thanks, he was really long, I was surprised, but not too fat like a rattlesnake is.

    Hi Michele, thanks, I am getting used to seeing snakes and am not afraid of them but I still give them a wide berth because any snake will bite if cornered, can't blame them for that.

    Hi Lori, thanks, if I saw one eye to eye I'd scream, but at a distance I am mostly curious as to their habits. The internet said they are fast snakes, this one was just lumbering along.

  8. I hear that they find rattlesnakes in the cliffs over along the Mississippi River. I live several miles from the river so all we get are harmless garter snakes.

  9. He was a big one. We had a black racer on the patio that did not want to leave. My husband kept trying to shoe it off with the broom and it keep trying to strike They are fast. Our house sitter saw one go into our patio fish pond, and we were 2 fish short:(

  10. Almost all of our snakes are poisonous and a few make the top ten most poisonous world snake list. I do not do them well. In one of our houses one (poisonous) lived under the front steps. I only used the back door all summer. They are protected (rightfully) but I would still prefer they were elsewhere.

  11. Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, if there are rattlesnakes nearby they can also be near you so be careful.

    Hi Jennie, thanks, yes he was really long; I read that they will bite so be careful, I guess all snakes can swim too, too bad about the fish.

    Hi Elephant's Child, thanks, scary having that many poisonous snakes where you live, wouldn't like that. we have coral snakes here which are poisonous and aggressive, haven't seen any but our neighbors have seen them. Ugh.
