Oops and Trial by Bisque

The last bit of sanding and this poppy bowl broke, oops. I'm glad it was this one and not any of the stacked strip pieces which broke.

A casserole, basket, serving tray and two trees are all new forms using my stacked strip construction method. They're just finishing their trial by bisque, hope they all make it. Oh there is another strip tray on the middle shelf. I had to use some small half shelves to get the tree plates included in this load. Will know this afternoon after the kiln cools down. I so hope those trees hold together. This post is part of Mud Colony what's happening in the studio. Click the link to be taken to the post for other artist's who are sharing their clay journey.

The other day Gary and I were leaving the grocery store parking lot and a crow flew over our car. I could see something large in it's beak. I looked up and saw the crow was carrying a whole mouse. It's beak was wrapped over the middle of the mouse. The mouse was still alive and I could see it's pink feet wiggling. I was amazed that a crow could carry something so large and not drop it. I had my camera with me, but it was in the back seat and the crow flew into a pine tree. Still it was amazing to see a crow as a predator to a mouse.

Above is a fern plate from the last firing which had much more cinnamon underglaze which all but burned out. I see there is an errant speck of blue on the left hand side near the edge, guess the plate is for me. Although I often find the pieces I think aren't perfect or turn out the way I expect are often the very pieces that sell the quickest. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Oh what a shame that the pink broke. I did not think crows took mice.

  2. Sorry the pink broke. But I really, really like the greens in that plate. Couldn't see the blue; maybe, to me it looks like it belongs there so I can't see it.

  3. It's a drag to have the pink break when you put so much work into it. I'm looking forward to the trees. Are they Christmassy!
I can't see anything wrong with the fern plate. It's beautiful.

  4. I bet it is exciting to open the kiln each time...and that you hold your breath and cross your fingers. Can you use the broken pieces for anything?

  6. Back in the day we would call that a house plate. Not to leave the house. However, I would be selling that puppy in a heart beat. The speck just got away.

  7. I am coming in late, and can only join the chorus: I am sad that the pink plate broke, love the fern plate, and have my fingers crossed fro when the kiln cools. Such a nerve wracking time.

  8. It's a shame about the poppy plate, it looks really nice. I love the green plate and don't think that speck is a reason to consider it a second. Someone else will love it and want it too.

  9. Hi Elna, thanks, I had no idea that crows would catch a mouse either, it was rather strange to see.

Hi Kittie, thanks, it's just a small dot on the right hand side.

Hi Suzi, thanks, it just a small dot, can't wait for the trees, the white one can be for any time of year even for a wedding table decoration I think.

Hi Dee, thanks not the broken pieces can't be used for anything, it is truly exciting each time I open the kiln though.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, the fern turned out nice was supposed to have more cinnamon thought but still nice.

Hi Joanne, thanks, a house plate, Ha. good one I will probably sell it and someone will be happy with it.

Hi Elephant's Child, thanks, nerve racking but exciting too.

Hi Lori, thanks, most times folks like to see the original pieces and most folks turn everything upside down and are amazed to see they are all signed. Ha. I have to keep remembering to sign them all. The trees I couldn't find a place to sign oh I could have on the inside, oh well.
