Use Your Canned Goods

This large strip stacked basket is about 12 inches long and 8 inches tall. I think the handle could have been a little taller. When I finished making the bottom portion the sides started to splay out. While I held the sides in place, I called for Gary to please bring me some cans from the pantry.

I used a piece of foam between the can and basket so the rim of the can wouldn't dent the clay. The handle was too weak to stand by itself so I used a rolled up piece of foam to temporarily hold it up. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  3. When I had physical therapy for my shoulder several years ago, I was told to use one pound cans as weights to exercise with.

  5. How clever, and ingenious. I think that you might be right about the handle - but it is beautiful just the same.
If you hadn't used the cans, how far do you think the splaying would have continue? To destruction point - or to a more abstract piece?

  6. great use of canned goods!
Have you ever tried to force dry with a torch or hair dryer?
For tall handles I lay them on my work bench in the shape I need, and let them stiffen up some before applying to the pot. Sometimes lightly covering with plastic and leaving them overnight.

  7. That's a great idea! I normally recommend making clay supports but that's not always practical when your hands are so busy trying to hold the piece in shape.

  8. Hi Barbara, thanks, I always seem to get myself in these predicaments but somehow wiggle out of them too. Ha.

Hi Gayle, thanks, oh so true if it works it's the way to go for sure.

Hi Joanne, thanks, yes the noodle gets a work out.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, now that's a good idea for exercise. I need to strap them on my ankles as my arms already get a work out. Ha.

Hi Gigi, thanks, now you see why I have so much 'stuff' I've acummulated.

Hi Elephant's Child, thanks, I wasn't sure how tall I could go and get it to stand up since I couldn't think of something soft enough to hold it up. Not sure what the splaying would have done, that will be another piece. Ha.

Hi Michele, thanks, I seem to always attach at soft stage, must try the leather hard way one of these days. I did get a hair dryer recently to dry the slip will have to make it more handy to use when I get in these predicaments.

Hi Lori, thanks, I seem to be in the middle of making something when I discover I have backed myself into a corner and then I have to improvise, I need more and more props it seems.
