Canned Hams & Playing Hooky

This sprightly vintage trailer with a manikin fisherman in the canoe resides alongside Highway 44 between Inverness and Interstate 75. I finally stopped to get a photo to show you. Gary and I once had a dream to run a campground with vintage trailers but that never came to pass. However we still admire them. Now it seems there are vintage trailer clubs and some are called "canned hams". Folks restore vintage trailers and travel around and camp in them. Maybe someday we'll have a vintage trailer. Little Vintage Trailers is a blog with information on restored vintage trailers.

While I'm waiting for my kiln relays to arrive in the mail I've been playing hooky and not doing much. In the next day or two I hope to detail an account of my kiln repair. In the meantime my thoughts and motivations have gone astray. Be back soon. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Hello Linda:
Such a fun caravan and we love the canoe on top! Friends of ours in Brighton have recently restored an Airstream caravan - if that name means anything?

  2. My thoughts and motivations have gone a bit astray as well Linda, but I do love those vintage campers. I once camped at a vintage trailer park in Bisbee, AZ. Plastic Flamingos in the yard. It was very cool and a diner to eat at, too.

    Have a good day!

  4. Fabulous shot of that lovely unique camper. I didn't know vintage campers were having a comeback. Great!

  5. I can definitely see why they call them "canned hams"! It would be fun to stay in one.

  6. Went to the RV show this weekend...no vintage there. Too bad, it would have been a fun addition to the show. Sheesh...I went in the most expensive ones...!!! Talk about pure luxury.

  9. I am up to knowing two people who have restored and go travelling in their tiny vintage trailers. Havn't heard them called canned hams before. I'll have to try that out on one owner I'll see tomorrow.

  10. I rode in an RV several times on the east coast back in the 1970s. Very nice and lots of fun!

  11. I started out married life in a trailer not much bigger than that. Thankfully, I only lived in it for a year.

  13. Hi Jane and Lance, thanks, oh I am unfamiliar with the caravan but I will do some research on it, these old icons are so much fun.

Hi Meredith, thanks, I want one too, I'd have so much fun decorating it.

Hi Teresa, thanks, I think that is the first vintage trailer park we learned of years ago, just when we had the idea to have an airstream park someone else already did it. Going astray is needed every once in a while.

Hi Suzi, thanks, yes kid's would definitely enjoy these or adults who want to be kids again. Ha.

Hi Barbara, thanks, I think their small size helps in bringing them back since cars are now much smaller and have less horsepower to pull the bigger trailers.

Hi Michele, thanks, yes the rounded ones do look like the shape those canned hams come in.

Hi Turquoisemoon, thanks, I'll bet the prices of those luxury models were up there too.

Hi Lori, thanks, oh I'd love to see your friend's vintage trailer.

Hi Helen, thanks, the colors really make these trailers so much fun.

Hi Joanne, thanks, oh what fun your friends must have travelling in their restored trailers and an instant conversation starter they are.

Hi Gigi, thanks, Gary and I have had several trailers, motorhomes, and cabover campers and hope to again, they are definitely fun to travel in around the country.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, starting out in one of these would be difficult. The first time we moved into an RV Gary said we went from 2000 square feet to 240, it was definitely an adjustment.

Hi Dee, thanks, we too would love to be a part of a vintage club, there are clubs for single women that are quite numerous and we knew a woman and her daughter on the West Coast that belonged to one, she and her daughter both loved the trips they took together.
