Fern Platters

Here are the fern platters. I made these as pairs since the design runs from one to the other. I like the first pair better. Those are slipped with my own colored slips.

For this second pair I've used mostly commercial under glazes; once again the brush marks show more than I wanted. On some larger plates I'll show you tomorrow, the brush marks didn't show. Must be in my technique. Practice makes perfect I guess. Ha.

Here are some tea bag holder, or they could be used for tea lights, spoon rests, ring holders or spice prep dishes.
They're about three and one half inches in diameter. These seem easy to make, but it takes quite some time to sand each one in the nooks and crannies.

Once again I tried the clear satin glaze over one. I'm really liking the subtle sheen of the plain white. Can't wait to make a whole set of white dishes.

These will be in my Etsy Shop as soon as I get the five photos taken and upload them. This post is part of Artists in Blogland show and tell Saturday. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Hello Linda:
Yes, we too prefer the more subdued colour palette of the first pair of fern leaf plates.

We are not surprised that the small dishes are so time consuming to make. It is so often the case with tiny things.

  2. I use Amaco Velvet UG, and it fired even without showing marks much. The armadillo is sweet. It is one of the many animals I like to make one day. : )

  3. Hi Jane and Lance, thanks, you are right the small things sometimes take longer than the big ones. Ha.

Hi Midori, thanks, I am using the amaco velvet under glazes. the mottled outcome might be the fact I had some other clay and these might be made with that which distorts the color, I am not going to get that clay again, but I had to use it up before I could get more of the other clay.

  6. I like the white too. The small items are often the most time consuming.....try convincing customers of that!

  8. Your fern platters came out lovely. Seeing them earlier I had no idea how much color they would have as well as the imprinted leaves. They are both great sets, and I imagine you're selling them as sets. Food will look great on either color combo, just different types. The colorful ones would be great piled high with greens, or maybe mashed potatoes.

  10. Hi Barbara, thanks, one of these days I'll make one of these pieces and show the green, bisque, and the glaze fired all in the same post, would be interesting to see them all together. I like your description of the type of foods to place on fern plates(or trays).

Hi Lori, thanks, the bright pair may be just the ones that sell the quickest as usually when I don't prefer the work that's what sells first. Ha.

  14. I need to check out your Etsy site...I really like the tea bag holders. I would use them for the tea lites. What do you do with mistakes...can they be melted down or anything like that?

  15. Hi Dee, thanks, they are just the right size for tea lights, I don't put everything in the Etsy shop either so if you see it here on the blog just let me know; you can purchase there or send me a check and I can mail direct from my home.

  19. Linda - Your fern platters are lovely! I prefer the second set though - I think the saturated colors set off the fern in a dramatic way! Gorgeous work!

  21. Hi Anna, thanks, try to keep abreast, I'm liking the little plates, easy to stack too.

Hi Carol, thanks, lots of work was piled up finally got it all fired.

Hi Corrine, thanks, yes some brightness was needed after all the cloudy days here.

Hi Michellem, thanks, oh so glad you like the second set, I meant for it to be dramatic just not satisfied with the striations in the colors, will keep trying.

Hi Sherry, thanks, these little dishes are versatile and don't takel up much space in the cabinet. I could also envision them with little pats of butter or individual sauces at a dinner table.
