Down by the Pond

One of the folks camped nearby us has bursitis really bad in her hips and is pretty much bedridden so I took some lavender buds over hoping their fragrance would relax and cheer her up. I'm reminded I only have to look around to find someone else worse off than myself.

While I was out I decided to take a walk down to the pond at the RV park where we're staying. I sat on a bench nearby and spotted some ducks resting in the shade. It had rained earlier and the air was heavy and humid (not as much as Florida though).

Nearby was an outdoor fire pit with a pile of birch logs. I was half wishing it was cold so I could start a fire, but it wasn't even close to cold.

The birch logs were filled with woodpecker holes. I was thinking the logs might be difficult to keep lit since they are so thick but perhaps by winter they'll be good and dry.

Drooping out over the water was a tree loaded with berries. I went over to inspect the tree. I think it may be a flowering crab apple tree, which are grown more for their flowers and foliage then they are for their fruit. There are lots of varieties of flowering crab apples.

Seeing this tree reminded me of some blooming crab apple trees near our home when I was about ten years old living in Maryland (sometimes I can't believe the things I recall). One of these days I'd like to have a crab apple tree in my yard; they're beautiful in bloom and spread out nice and wide providing good summer shade. And some crab apples are good to snack on.  Some days I miss gardening and some days I miss working with clay, today it was gardening. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. You always seem to find the prettiest campgrounds. This one looks lovely and serene.
You are so right....we have only to look around to see someone worse off than ourselves.
I miss your pottery........pots, thoughts and comments... but we get a travelogue instead!

  2. Hi Suzi, thanks, this forced break from clay may be good for me to get myself organized and get a more cohesive body of work together rather than just willy nilly. Ha.

Hi Meredith, thanks, yes we are still near Hendersonville and taking day trips, we are staying in a park for one month because the cost is less if we stay for a month. Yesterday we went to Tryon, Columbia, Landrum, and holly Spring in SC and NC which are close by. We are liking the rolling hills and streams and forests.

  3. I have been picking lavender each week at STARgarden and it always makes me think of you and your lavender farm. I have been keeping it in vases, sometimes with other flowers. It's scent is wonderful.
When I was a kid there was a crab apple tree near our bus stop... of course the boys loved to throw them at the girls to make them scream.

  4. I'm sure the lavender and the gesture helped to comfort the woman.

  6. I agree that flowering crabapple trees are nice to have. Ours provides a great stopover for migrating robins in the fall. There will be flocks of them here for a couple weeks until the tree is stripped of every last little apple.

  7. Staying for a month and poking about. How footloose is that?

  8. I am sure that the woman with bursitis welcomed your gesture. And lavender has such a soothing aroma.
That looks like a truly beautiful spot to stop. Thank you for taking us with you on your travels.

  9. Grew up with a crabapple tree in my back yard. Only problem was when the crabapples fell- the bees came and mowing it was a disaster and well, I'm allergic to bees! It was all a mess.... they're beautiful until the fruit comes.

  12. Hi Michele, thanks, oh it does sound so wonderful to pick it, I remember cutting mine after the dew was gone but before it got too hot and the bees came out sometimes I picked it when the bees were out and they didn't mind cause they just went on to the next bush.

Hi Lori, thanks, hopefully she is cheered up sometimes life in an RV park can be lonely if you are cooped up inside.

Hi Barbara, thanks, oh it was rainy but now it's sunny and big puffy white clouds that seem so close I could reach and grab them and the bluest sky surrounding them. I hope to get up your way in the next week or so.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, then a crab apple is a good one to plant if it gives the birds something to eat after traveling so far.

Hi Joanne, thanks, oh we are footloose but not so fancy and nothing is free. Ha.

Hi Elephant's Child, thanks, we are enjoying the down time for sure.

Hi Amy, thanks, oh I didn't know the bees were attracted to the fallen fruit. Might have to wait till they are gone or mow at night. I hope to get to see you on this trip and the way up or down.

Hi Marguerite, thanks, oh and my cooking horizons are broadening here too.

Hi Dee, thanks, it does take a while to wind down after all the stress of packing and putting things in storage and all. It was about three months of organizing things so will take three months to take it easy. Ha.
