Glaucoma

Yesterday I went to get my eyes checked and I found out I have glaucoma. Unfortunately I have it in my right eye which is my good eye. (The eye I see best out of). I have to go to a specialist to see what comes next. My trip may have to be postponed. I don't have any health insurance and can't afford to get any. Hopefully drops will fix my problem; if I need surgery I have no idea what I'll do. Glaucoma can blind a person and you may not notice there is a problem till it's too late. Glaucoma affects one in 200 hundred people over fifty and one in 10 people over 80. Certain ethnic groups are more likely to develop glaucoma even at an early age. Please get  your eyes checked and be sure they check your eye pressure. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  2. OH Boo Linda! What a shame!! The drops do well though.
My husband has glaucoma and it is just a matter of being diligent with the treatment.
    Don't stop being creative!

  3. Hi Elephant's Child, thanks, Oh I hope it is an inexpensive fix for sure.

Hi Sadhana, thanks, I hope the drops are all I need. The prospect of loosing my eye sight has given me quite a jolt to say the least. All I could think of is how can I paint or sculpt without eyesight, so no worry to loosing or discarding my creativity.

  4. I'm so sorry to hear the news, Linda. My paternal grandmother had it, but I don't know how she was treated. My maternal side has cataract. So I am careful with UV although I am certain I will have it one day. As we get older, we will need more health care. It might be an opportunity for you to look at health insurance, as a priority. : )

  6. Sorry to read about the glaucoma, you will feel quite shocked and fearful with that sort of news. The people that I know of that have glaucoma are given eye drops to keep it under control. I hope that there is something simple and effective that can be done for you and that you can still have your road trip. Hugs, P

  7. There always seems to be a monkey wrench in the works, somewhere. I'm so sorry to hear of this. I'm glad it was caught early. My Mother-in-Law's glaucoma was well controlled with drops.

In a few years you will be able to get medicare.....the cost of eye care will go down considerably. Health insurance is probably unaffordable now but once you have medicare there are some good inexpensive plans available....depending on what state you live in.

All this is cold comfort now. Toes crossed that all goes will with you and that you will be able to travel.

  12. I hope that your prognosis is good. I have a friend with glaucoma in both eyes and she's been taking eye drops for years without any loss of vision. Hopefully, this will wind up being nothing more than a nuisance.

  13. Linda I am so sorry about this. I remember hnow frightened I felt when I was diagnosed with it almost 5 years go. I imagine I felt the same things you are going through. With using the drops that are prescribed, my pressures have remained steady and even though it is a worry, it's not as dire as it was at first. Mine is in my right eye also. The drops that I use have finally gone generic, so they are not as costly as they were at first. Hopefully, they can get you all set up for a treatment regine, then you can be on your way. Ask your doctor for samples, as they do have them! When I had no insurance my Doc was very helpful in giving them to me.

  14. So sorry to hear about the Glaucoma. Hopefully the drops will keep it in check. Hugs!

I know all too well what it feels like to be faced with the possibility of losing one's eyesight. I had cataracts in my 40's (which were easily fixed with surgery) and more recently had surgery for a detached retina. I couldn't see out of that eye for 3 months, but it's all good now.

  20. Oh, Linda, I'm sooo sorry! I have a friend in New Orleans who used the drops very successfully for long years until she decided to have the operation. Two things: (1) there should be literature at your local CVS/Walgreen's about how to get insurance under new Federal guidelines (ask if there isn't about where to go) and (2) laser surgery, much cheaper than the glaucoma surgery, can remove glaucoma -- check very, very carefully into this as there might be an alternative path.

    Hang in there!!!
