A White Squirrel

Look, look, look what I saw, a white squirrel! This isn't a hoax; the photo is not altered other than cropped and reduced in size. This really is a white squirrel; one of the native fauna here in Western North Carolina. We saw this white squirrel in Flat Rock. Apparently the white squirrel is a variation of the grey squirrel and they live around here. There is even a White Squirrel Festival. This one seemed to have a different quality to it's fur and also walked differently than the gray squirrels I'm familiar with but maybe that's normal for white squirrels. The white squirrel seemed to hop more than run like other squirrels. Next time I see one I'll be sure to observe the gait of the squirrel much more closely.

This squirrel is not an albino; as you can see there are several patches of darker color. Don't you know I want to make a white squirrel plate or some such in clay. Oh this little guy was so cute. Gary said he thought this squirrel was older due to his unusual gait, but we have no way of knowing. We can only observe more closely the next time we see a white squirrel. I'm sure this is a good luck sign for all of you reading and commenting here and for us too. Isn't mother nature grand? Happy fourth to you all. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  2. That is so cool! I have never heard of white squirrels. Which only proves, "There are more strange things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

Happy Fourth to you and Gary!

  5. Wow...really great. Beautiful white squirrel. White rabbit on the first, and a white squirrel on the 4th. Got to mean something, right? Happy 4th to you.

  7. We had an albino squirrel around here for several years. The poor thing was under-size and had a broken leg, maybe from having poor vision. Your squirrel looks good-sized and has a good coat.

  8. Linda I hadn't heard of white squirrels before either. This one does remind me of the white persian cat that lives at the other end of my street.. You are a quick draw with your camera! What a lot of pots you will be making with all this inspiration on your travels :)

  9. There used to be a white one here. We always thought it would be predated, but has survived longer than 6 years. : )

  10. Hi Barbara, thanks, we read about them but never dreamed we'd see one. Ha.

Hi Suzi, thanks, we were definitely surprised, I guess they aren't as rare as we thought.

Hi Michele, thanks, I guess they have them in Florida and other states too but I had never heard of them.

Hi Joanne, thanks, I hope the white squirrel brings us good luck.

Hi Barbara, thanks, I was thinking the same thing as you.

Hi Elephant's Child, thanks, I think it was really lucky too especially since I remembered to bring my camera along.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, oh that poor squirrel. I do think the squirrel's coat was extra thick looking.

Hi Anna, thanks, so many interesting things to do and learn.

Hi Midori, thanks, I wonder how long squirrels live, how interesting that you have them also.

    Hi

  11. There's an area of woods nearby us where we occasionally see white squirrels. I read about them some years ago, and from what I remember they are not actually considered albino.
