Carolina Mountain Bounty

We took a drive in the foothills of South Carolina the other day and passed by a roadside waterfall near Cleveland, South Carolina.
The falls fell into a shallow pool and continued over some slick rock and under a bridge.

On the way back home we stopped at a roadside stand and got some local peaches, blackberries, sourwood honey, and heirloom yellow and Cherokee purple tomatoes. A little further down the road we stopped at a roadside BBQ and got some hickory smoked pulled pork and vinegar slaw which we took home for dinner. We had the blackberries for dessert. Gary had some of the honey on his oatmeal the next morning and believe it or not I had the yellow tomato for breakfast. I'm letting the peaches soften just a bit. Everything was delicious. We had a day full of Carolina mountains bounty. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. I love the foods of summer and you can not beat a good tomato anytime of the day.

  2. I eat tomatoes for breakfast all the time! And the leftover grilled vegetables...I am an unconventional breakfast eater. I hope the peaches are good, we just picked some up yesterday as well. Enjoy!!

  3. I've been growing tomatoes of those colors...have yet to get one to eat without little ugly things on them...but there are a few ripening in the window right now. And I got fresh nectarines last week too. Whow. (They were hard to ripen tho, and needed sweetner for my taste)

  7. I have not seen the back roads scenery of South Carolina since I was a child. Still beautiful. And bountiful.

  9. I like tomatoes for breakfast too, especially with a piece of heavy grain or sourdough toast. Only farm fresh ones, though. Oh and only room temp, NEVER refrigerated. LOL I rarely buy grocery tomatoes anymore, they are a big disappointment. Same with peaches from the grocery. Saddens me that a lot of folks don't know what real produce is supposed to taste like. In season and grown close to home. Beautiful scenery, I can almost hear the water!

Hi Jennie, thanks, the peaches were good with a day or two to ripen.

Hi Barbara, thanks, I think all this rain has some of the sweetness diluted in the fruits.

Hi Midori, thanks, oh those blackberries were so good.

Hi Lori, thanks, those tomatoes put some of my heirloom grown ones to shame, but the taste of them can't be beat even if they are ugly.

Hi Suzi, thanks, every time we drive by that waterfall folks are under it taking in the cool water.

Hi Joanne, thanks, there is so much countryside without a lot of civilization which we are enjoying.

Hi Ms. Sparrow, thanks, those tomatoes were delicious and juicy.

Hi Barbara, thanks, I can barely make myself buy store bought tomatoes either, the waterfall was so refreshing on a hot day stopping by there.
