Our New Home

Even though we closed on our new home yesterday we spent the night in the motorhome since we don't have any furniture yet. Plus we have to keep the motorhome warm so the pipes don't freeze. When I got up this morning it was 6 degrees. I'm sitting here at Starbucks till it warms up then we'll head over the hill to our new home. This first photo was taken last Spring, the landscape is more barren in the winter with all the leaves off the trees.

The house is perched on a hill on one and one third acres with a nice view of the local mountains. The main level (middle) has the kitchen, dining, living, one bedroom and a bath. The upper level has a loft and the main bedroom and a bath. The lower level has a walk out basement with a large room and bathroom on one side and a garage and workshop area on the other side. Gary saw a lift system we can get at Harbor Freight to bring up groceries from the lower to middle level, more about those plans later.

Since we're living in a recreational and tourist area of the North Georgia mountains, we're might start a bed and breakfast or seasonally rent either the upper or lower level. In the lower level we'll put in a small kitchen to it can be self contained as a studio apartment. In the meantime I'll work on my pottery in the lower level. Later we plan on moving the studio to a free standing building. If we can sell the motorhome and the bus quickly those plans will materialize rapidly. More details on the bus and motorhome we're selling soon.

The interior (this is the living room) is a blank slate for decorating and we're having fun thinking of how to furnish the inside.

Here's the dining room; I can't find photos of the kitchen or bedrooms.

The main level has a deck on all four sides. The main floor living room and bedroom have french doors leading to this covered deck area. We're dreaming of spending lots of time out-of-doors enjoying all the seasons. If it's too hot or cold we can move to one side of the house or the other to take advantage of sun or shade.

Here's the back covered deck off the kitchen area a great place to have a BBQ. I have an idea to build a small waterfall on the hillside behind with a small koi pond at bottom and perhaps an outdoor fireplace. I always have big plans but a small budget but where there is a will there is a way. I'll search for bargains in rocks and bricks and see what I can come with.

Years ago when Gary and I were first married I saw an add for free bricks. I had an old decrepit Cadillac and drove 20 miles to get the bricks and loaded them in the trunk. After a while the back of the car started sinking lower and lower. So I started loading the bricks in the back seat floor and then the front seat floor. Then I drove home very slowly since my car was overloaded and swaying back and forth. Gary came home and almost had a fit saying it wasn't safe to haul all those bricks in a car. But I knew if I had waited someone else would have gotten the free bricks. See what I mean about where there is a will there is a way. Ha.

Well I better get back to the RV so we can head up to our new home. More photos and details later. Now the unwelcome task of packing and moving all of our stuff begins. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  15. What a lovely home, with a view no less! It sounds like the perfect house. Perhaps we will come to GA and stay in your B&B one day! If there is a Habitat REeStore anywhere nearby, you can sometimes find deals on stones etc. My husband hand dug our fish pond and the liner happened to be on sale at Lowes. I recently saw big pond liners at Ollie's a close out store. If you keep your eyes open, as you say, you will find what you need! Congratulations, looks like you might have some nice weather for the next day or two at least!

  16. What a beautiful home, and how exciting that you have thoughts about doing B&B there one day. I can imagine how nice it will be sitting up on the deck and looking out at the trees and view. You and Gary will have a lot of fun doing the furnishing, and making the place your own.

Hi, Peter, thanks, our thinking is (at our age we have to face the facts) that if one of us passes on the other could afford to keep the house with an additional income; we shall see what materializes in the future. We are hoping for some snow after we get all moved in and can put our feet up and rest our weary bones.

Hi Trish, thanks, we figure all the stairs will either kills us or get us back in shape. Hopefully the latter. Ha.
