Banding Wheel

All these years I've never had a banding wheel for my pottery work. I've used inexpensive lazy susans purchased at dollar stores. The problem with the lazy susans is they lean and aren't level so work sometimes ends up the same way. The idea of the banding wheel is to place your work on the wheel which is easily rotated around so the work doesn't have to be turned with your hands.

I decided to order an inexpensive banding wheel last week. The order didn't specify what size the banding wheel was. When I received the wheel I realized the diameter isn't as large as I thought and it's fairly lightweight. For the price I'll make do (for now anyway).

I had an old bread board I was going to donate but I retrieved it. Gary mounted the banding wheel to the bread board for me. The added weight will make the banding wheel much more sturdy, yet it's still easy to pick up and move. Yesterday we planted three flowering pear trees to help shade our driveway in summer. I was hoping to find some yellow clay but I only found red. Next week I want to till up a section of the grass to put in some perennials. I'd like to have a cutting garden. I love bringing fresh flowers into the home.

Have you ever shopped at Big Lots? We went there the other day and I found several jars of spices which were quite inexpensive. I like to use spice in my cooking so this was a boon to me; spices can be very costly. You know how they say a penny saved is a penny earned. Nowadays it takes a lot of pennies to save. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Big lots here has some good deals on organics, canned goods and such.
We have a good banding wheel we found on sale, worth having.

  2. Congrats on your purchases. Be careful about planting trees next to the driveway, because their roots might cause the driveway to crack or buckle. Same with the foundation of your house.

  3. Our big lots is pretty far away; years since I've been there. I bought my luggage there; I wonder if either child is still using it.

  4. When I bought my shimpo wheel nearly 10 years ago, Sheffield Pottery offered free shipping on the wheel and any other equipment I ordered, if it were shipped with clay. I took advantage of it and ordered a shimpo banding wheel. It's heavy and spins beautifully. This year Jeff sprung for a low profile one for his birthday present... and they are beautiful shimpo blue!
If you ever decide on a different model, I highly recommend the shimpo.

  5. I hope your banding wheel works out ok.
Love that you are planting trees - and I too like to bring some of the garden inside.

  7. The Shimpo banding wheels are the best. They are really heavy but they last forever and spin forever also. I use one when spraying glazes (and many other times) because I can start the spin then get my hand out of the way of the glaze spray. I get the entire pot glazed easily.

  8. hope your banding wheel works out well. I must take a photo of the one I use - my Dad made it from spare parts but it is great.
Wish I could bring flowers into the house but my fella gets terrible hayfever :(

  9. Hi Meredith, thanks, I'll have to go to Big Lots more often; hopefully this one helps better than the one I had.

Hi Gigi, thanks, I hope the roots don't travel but it's such a big expanse of driveway we needed a buffer.

Hi Joanne, thanks, I'll bet that luggage is better than what one can find nowadays.

Hi Michele, thanks, well one of these days I'll invest in a shimpo banding wheel.

Hi Elephant's Child, thanks, it already looks more homey around here with the few plants we've put in.

Hi Trish, thanks, we are definitely glad it has warmed up some during the day.

Hi Lori, thanks, I know I used a heavy one in school and really liked it one of these days I'll get one of them.

Hi Anna, thanks, oh aren't you lucky to have a dad that can make a banding wheel, sometimes homemade is the best. My slab roller was homemade by one of my former classmates and it works like a charm and the price was definitely better than what they cost new.
