Peak at the Studio & Where to Put the Kiln

Here's a quick view of the studio cabinets we installed this weekend. As I mentioned one of the drawer base cabinets was missing so we can't finish up till it comes in about a week.

We've got the countertop propped up with saw horses and some of my ware boards till we get the other base cabinet. I also have to get some longer screws for the knobs on the drawers this week. I even made a few pieces which I put in the cabinets to dry. I'll take photos to show you later today.

Can't wait to sit down at my new work space soon. I may even have to organize myself. Ha. But often I am more like this poem posted by Jenny Mendes today. Click on over to read Advice to Myself  by Louise Erdrich.

Advice Please - can I put my kiln outside on the back porch? The porch is covered above. I don't want to put it in the garage because it's under the house and even with a vent the fumes may radiate up into the house. Or should I put the kiln in a separate building, like a small shed? What do you think? Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Your studio space is beautiful!
We have our electric kiln outside under a covered extension from our porch. We built a wall on one exterior side using metal roofing to give some added protection from the elements. It works for us and no need to vent.

  2. Hello Linda:

This all look s to be exceedingly smart and very work like. You must be very excited and we imagine cannot wait to install yourself and start working properly.

Alas, we are not in a position to suggest where best to site the kiln. It might though be handiest if as close to where you work as possible.

  5. Hi Michele, thanks, I am wondering about the cold weather, whether that will affect the running of the kiln?

Hi Jane and Lance, thanks, hopefully the new cabinets will keep me organized. Ha.

Hi Elephant's Child, thanks, something about a new cabinet acquisition that may require me to do them justice by getting more organized.

  6. I have studio envy. It looks great.

Your kiln should be fine outside provided it's sheltered from rain and snow. Just be sure to give it 18" from any walls. I'd try to keep the controls on the opposite side from where the weather normally comes in.

  7. Lori gave good advice about the control panel. As long as everything is protected from rain/snow it will be fine.
My electric kiln in NH was in the kiln shed next to the gas kiln. We fired it in all kinds of weather and temps.
