Never Cut a Weed Till You're Sure

There are these woody scruffy looking shrubs on our back hill. It took them forever to leaf out. Gary kept saying he wanted to cut them down. Since it was such a cold winter I said lets wait, they might be something. Some of them are still leafing out and they don't really look much better leafed out. But today I noticed they have very tiny rose and lavender flowers all over. I guess they aren't weeds after all.  Do you know what these are? They look like they might be in the pea family. The shrub is about 4 to 5 feet tall with roundish leaves which are opposite, and has a woody stem.

Yesterday I made this basket with rose, turquoise and gold slip. Today I'm thinking I might want to combine rose and lavender together on a pot like the flowers above. Hope you're having a relaxing day. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Rose and lavender together sounds a lovely combination of colours on a pot. It is nice when nature provides inspiration. I wouldn't be able to guess what the shrub is, but I am sure that you are right about it being in the pea family. Not only can it give you inspiration for colour combinations, but it might even give some nitrogen to the soil and something sustaining for the bees! Maybe the scruffy shrub is useful after all! :)

  2. Love the pot - and the shrub. And, sorry, other than agreeing about the pea family (though possible with that woodiness a distant cousin) I can be no help.

  3. Hi Peter, thanks, I think it might be a bush clover but the leaves don't look right for that,

Hi Elephant's Child, thanks, possibly distant cousin, maybe someone else will know.

  4. I think the shrub is in the locust family.

  5. Sweet colors to see on those pots...can't wait! No clue on the plant...but if it's growing naturally throughout the woods, you can bet it's a volunteer!

  7. I'm not really sure what that is but it's only a weed if you don't like it.

  8. I do think rose and lavender go together well. It was the color of my bedroom growing up. I shared it with my older sister and she probably picked the colors. I did like it, but being a tomboy would probably have picked denim or some sort of blue and tan (which I still like).

  9. Hi Christine, thanks, oh that sounds about right; I do some further research.

Hi Barb, thanks, from what I can see it's only growing on the barren back hill so not sure if someone planted it and then it started to reseed itself.

Hi Gigi, thanks, well I do try but I have a lot of trying times along with the fun.

Hi Lori, thanks, that's true a weed is only a plant unwanted or out of place is what I learned before I became a landscaper, lol.

Hi Rian, thanks, I guess I just haven't see that combo before but perhaps colors next to each other on the color wheel are just fine together.
