Christmas Tree Luminaries

A couple of years ago (has it been that long) I made this large (14 inches tall) Christmas tree luminary. I made this one with an overlapping strips of clay construction method.

At the time I planned on making some smaller luminaries with slabs. This past week I finally got around to making a few. I plan to make a few more in varying heights. These are about six inches tall and are large enough to place a votive candle or a battery operated tea light.

I made the plates separately and they've dried more quickly, hence the lighter color in this photo. This year my goal is to make a range of price points in clay pieces, hence these smaller luminaries. One more day working at the fair and it's back to working in the studio again. Thankfully my shoulder is much better; I'll have to be more careful from now on. This morning though we're expecting high winds and lots of rain, hope no trees fall down. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. My goodness, has it really been two years since you made the big one? I like the little ones; how will you glaze them? I'm trying Santa luminaries this year.

  2. The little ones are cute but I'd recommend the battery lights.6" tall with a candle under it is going to get awfully hot.

Hi Dennis, thanks, you are right a candle would make it awfully hot, I have some of those battery operated tea lights and they are quite nice.

  4. Cute festive trees! Yup I'd go with the batteries! Put candles in luminaries years ago and wow did they get hot!! Ended up changing the design completely.

  6. Hi Sandy, thanks, good to know about those candles, I can tell folks when they buy them.

Hi Pam, thanks, surprised you'd like a purple one, although purple and turquoise are two of my favorite colors but I never would have thought to make them other than green and white. I used slip stained with mason stains on the big one, still thinking about these, need to make more so I can have a variety of colors.

  7. Pottery luminaries, a great idea. Where have I been lately? I think the battery tea lights are very popular for luminaries.

Hi Lori, thanks, we closed up the booth after half a day, of course I had to work but hardly anyone was venturing out today.

Hi Barbara, thanks, my shoulder is much better today but I have to be sure to support my arm with a pillow before I fall asleep, yikes so much trouble, supposed to be the golden years.
