More Cowbell

After making a few bells yesterday I thought of making cowbells this morning. The world needs more cowbell; click the link to see the Saturday Night Live skit.

Yesterday I felt like pinching some clay so I made some bells. For the bell with the holes I plan on stringing some leather cord and using a ceramic bead to make the ring tone and perhaps string some other beads around the bottom edge. This type of bell can be hung from an overhang on the deck or in a tree. In the photo the hole on top doesn't look centered, Hum, I did think I centered it, we shall see if it's a crooked bell. Ha.

Then I thought of the table top bells or chimes from the Victorian era which led me to make a couple of bells with a handles. On the inside I added an attachment where a bead can be strung to ring this type of bell. We shall see how these work out.

We finally got a light dusting of snow yesterday. Lots of birds were in our yard trying to find food. There was a whole group of robins. I fear they started flying north too early. If only they had waited a week or two.

I know you can barely see him but that's a pileated woodpecker. If I open the door he flies away so I have to take the photo from inside. I've decided to wait till it warms up a bit before I fire my kiln so it's back to making more work. I've been reading about bells used at weddings which say, "Ring for a Kiss". Must check into that custom. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Tell those robins there is no reason to come north, probably not for another month.

  2. Hi Dennis, thanks, I know if only I could converse with them. They were on our lawn looking for worms, there may be a few over the septic tank but probably no where else. it's 4 degrees here and wind chill very very low.

  3. Cowbells! Yes! It must be cold! We have Downy, Hairy and Rose Crested (I think that's it) all coming to the feeders.
You are very patient to be willing to wait to fire!

  4. Hi Suzi, thanks, probably only this cold weather would have me thinking of cowbells. Ha. it's just too cold to go out on the porch to load the kiln. I would love to feed the birds but with my three cats I don't dare

  5. It's good that you have something to occupy yourself with during such bleak weather. What does your husband do?

  6. Hi Gigi, thanks, I am really lucky, he does a lot of reading but other than that he doesn't do much, but he does the housework and dishes. I do the cooking, he's been refurbishing the garage so we can insulate and sheetrock and paint, I've been trying to find him a hobby, he recently got a 4wd jeep to go jeeping but too cold to do that.

  7. I can't wait to see your finished bells! I have often thought of making some but never get around to it. My first wheel thrown pot in 9th grade ended up as a bell because the floor was too thin. My teacher showed me how to turn it into a bell.
Gary has a jeep! What fun. I can see you two 4 wheelin' through the backwoods of Georgia. Think of the photos you can take!

  8. Hi Michele, thanks, I have always wanted to make a bell too but never remember when I am in the studio till the other day that is. Not sure how practical they are to hand outside with the wind, we shall see. I think they could be kind of romantic on a covered patio though, maybe a string of bells together or a rain chain

He sold his truck when he went to florida and came back and we just found a jeep cherokee because we thought we could take it for weekends too. It's actually kind of nice for four wheeling but we always like getting clean used cars. He has yet to four wheel it but there are two 4wd clubs up here in Blairsville and we're looking forward to taking some day trips. This saturday is a trip to the swinging bridge over the Toccoa but it's too cold to go, but soon very soon. can't wait

  12. No one will be late for dinner now! :)

Stay warm up your way. Some areas are really under deep snow, aren't they? I don't know how they cope.

  13. it seems the USA has had a particularly cold winter... I feel sorry for the small animals trying to find enough food to survive..
My friend has found her bells to be a good seller, very popular as she makes them with either dog or cat faces on them. Hope yours are popular too.
