Spiny Lobster

Yesterday we had spiny lobster which Gary got when he was in Florida. Some folk say the true lobster is much better in flavor. I agree but to be sure I think I'd have to eat both in the same sitting. I did learn true lobster and spiny lobster are completely different. Spiny lobster is more closely related to crawfish than to true lobster. True lobster have claws on the front three legs and spiny lobster don't have claws. True lobster are found in colder waters and spiny lobster are found in almost all warm seas including the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and particularly common in Australasia and South Africa. At any rate the spiny lobster tail was delicious especially dipped in butter.

Here is a spiny lobster effigy excavated in 2007 in Belize, c AD 1550 from the Mayan culture.

The head is believed to be a Mayan deity.

Here's a nineteenth century Japanese plate depicting a crawfish or spiny lobster. Potters from all centuries are inspired by their surroundings.

Here's a spiny lobster rug from Anthropologie. Do a search on Pinterest for more spiny lobster items; it seems they're everywhere. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  5. Hi I'm interested in your photos of the lobster/centipede from Lamanai. Me and my husband found this amazing figurine back in 2007, when we were working on behalf of the Lamanai Archaeology project. although I have some photos of my own, these ones you have a good, and I'd really like to be able to use them if possible in my Lamanai guidebook which I publish for sale to tourists in Belize. If you know how I can obtain permission then that would be great. many thanks Louise Belanger.. check my website, I have made a replica of this figurine, amongst others from the site of Lamanai - www.louisebelanger.com

I have some photos myself, but these ones are good, and I'd very much like to be able to use them in the Lamanai guidebook which I publish for sale to tourists and guides at Lamanai.
