Put On Your Thinking Caps

I've held you in suspense for too long. Here is the wood look tile in our basement room. We haven't had a chance to put up the baseboards because we were tied up with other projects.

We've been planting herbs and vegetables and Gary put a lift kit on his jeep. You know how guys are about their cars, that always takes precedence.

Here's what the floor looks like, all grouted and freshly laid.

This alcove is large enough to fit a daybed. This basement room is perfect for a guest room. If one of us can't make it up the stairs we could stay down here.

OK please put on your thinking caps, the electrical panel box graces the wall on the other side of the room. How do you think we can camoflauge it?  I thought about putting in a corner desk with shelves above and having a door hiding the panel box. What do you think?  Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

    1. Hi Dennis, thanks, oh I guess I better post that in another post. He couldn't find a wrangler we could afford or that hadn't been abused so he got a grand cherokee for a good price, They all laughed at him when he joined the club but when they saw he could 4 wheel (had lots of experience in the West), they don't laugh any more. Ha.

  2. How about a door framed and hung over the box? Could look like a cupboard or something.
Yeah Dennis, guys and their cars!

    1. Hi Suzi, thanks, what a good idea, or a photo with a frame that's covers the door.

  3. Hi Linda...floor looks so good, and practical. I'd want to not camouflage the box too much, cause emergency folks need to be able to find it. A door with some kind of electrical symbol, or just paint flowers on the existing door...so the electricians can still see where it is...my suggestion anyway.

    1. Hi Barbara, thanks, the only folks needing to turn off the panel would be us and we'd know it was there. If we have visitors, we'll let them know it's hidden.

    2. I think what Barbara means is the fire department. Whenever possible, when there is a fire, they get into the house and flip the main breaker. By code your electrical panel is supposed to look like an electrical panel. When I was selling new construction, if the builder finished the basement the only thing he could do was paint the cover the same color as the room.

    3. oh I didn't realize that, ugh, it looks so ugly, well I can put up a chalk board or bulletin board that says electrical panel inside, perhaps.

    4. haha.. there you go, the perfect alternative! My sister has hers behind a curio cabinet and it makes me crazy. She doesn't seem concerned. If a breaker were to trip she would have to move the whole cabinet.

  4. Floor looks awesome Linda! As for the electrical panel, could you make some sort of artwork that would hand over it that would be easily removed if you need to get to it? I have made from old barn wood as a frame, a mosaic piece that is a menagerie of some of the broken pieces of pots I keep in a bucket. Just a thought. And tell Gary yeah on the Jeep! Hope you guys get to go on an awesome trail ride this summer!

    1. Hi Pam, thanks, we love the look of the floor, the barn wood would look good with the floor I think keeping that rustic theme. Gary is a member of the Blue Ridge Mountain Jeepers and he has already gone on several runs, my knee was bad so I didn't go but I'll be going soon and I'll take some photos and post a few of the rides.

  7. I think your original idea re the power box is a fine one; either that or a bookcase with the box covered with a faux set of books.

    Your tiles look great. :)
