Always Room for Improvement

12 x 12 x 4 inches

This is probably the nicest large bowl I've ever made. But next week I might tell  you the same thing about another bowl. That's just how it is, there's always room for improvement.

I overlapped the same glazes with this bowl as the yunomi (tea bowl) below and expected gold highlights but the bowl was on the top shelf and what I planned didn't materialize. The bowl is made with speckled stoneware and the yunomi below with white stoneware. Using different clay makes quite a bit of difference with the glazes.

This is the nicest yunomi (tea bowl) I've ever made but again next week it might not be. This is pinched and textured and glazed with multiple glazes.

3.25 x 3.25 x 3 inches

I'm experimenting with overlapping several glazes with these pieces and each one is different. I've learned the top shelf of the kiln doesn't produce the same results as the lower shelves. Not only is there always room for improvement but there is always something new I learn with each firing.

4 x 4 x 1 inches

I tried a new glaze combination for one of my meditation bowls and even though it's the same glass I've used on others the color fired deep blue rather than aqua. More to come so stay tuned. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  3. Couldn't agree more about discovery being one of life's greatest rewards for not giving up -- just a great feeling, like being a kid again and seeing a butterfly for the first time.

Gonna check out your frog post. Small world, eh? Haven't heard the serenading yet, but saw a YouTube video with one singing away -- will see if I can find it again --

Finally settled enough here so that there's balance, not looking at a million things to do each day (renters made a real mess) -- but not sure if NCwill work out -- some serious tax increases are coming from both the state and the county. Simply put, these people can't manage their money and keep digging themselves into a hole. Never seen anything like it before. We're looking downright brilliant in Louisiana. :)))

Missed you, too! Great to be back, even greater when this computer mess is cleared up.

    1. Hi Kittie, thanks, isn't it the way, everything is so expensive and gets more so every day, the fuel price reduction was the one happy note in all of the happenings; taxes were just too much for us in NC and the house prices seemed to be higher in the areas we wanted to live, wish we were closer to Ashville and drive to Atlanta is not good at all due to traffic, not to mention the high crime rates there. We love our mountain town but the winters are really cold wish we could afford to be in Florida in winter, maybe some day. ha.- folks don't take care of other's properties, we thought about renting our home but too risky, thinking of a bed and breakfast but have started to hold pottery classes finally so we shall see how those go.

for my computer in addition to virus protection, I use piriform cleaner every day and also malwarebytes about once a week, both free programs, they seem to help keep the computer
      problems away

the post before the frog one is on fireflies and we have a ton of them they are only active for less than 3 weeks but they light up the night sky.

if it's a government they can't manage the money because they don't make it they just spend it, and since it's our money they are spending why should they budget, time to reign in a lot of spending problems and mismanagement from the top on down - the economy still isn't good and there are too many folks out of work and yet we keep bringing in foreign workers to take our jobs and opening trade agreements with other countries benefiting but not ours. ??? a sad state of affairs all around - at least there is nature, writing, gardening, cooking, clay and the blogs.

  4. I do like the "best bowl." Plenty of crannies to put your thumb to move it about.

  8. Hi Michele, thanks, I may just have to keep it for myself. Oh gee I am going to a party this weekend, I can use it for the salad I am bringing - maybe.

  9. I like that large curvy bowl in the top photo. I can see putting a nice colorful pasta salad in it.

  11. Linda, just wondering about the glass you used. Do you purchase it as a granular or powder form? I sometimes put pieces of a blue wine bottle in plastic baggies to hammer them into sort of sugar size pieces. Takes a couple of baggies and they don't survive the pounding very well.

    1. Hi Melissa, thanks, this glass is sea glass that I got a long time ago, I do know folks have melted those glass marbles and I know there is glass you can order that is specifically for use with melting but have not tried either of those. The most I know is that glass can break pottery when it is melting if the surface is too small or square so that's why I use a bowl, a small amount of glass seems to make quite a large puddle and it isn't food safe since it can crackled when drying

  12. Thanks for the info. I haven't used it much and figured not everyone is bashing wine bottles like I am!
