Suzanne Valadon

Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938) was a French artist's model and painter.

She was the first woman painter admitted to the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1894.

She was a self taught artist who observed the painter's techniques she modeled for.

She was also the mother of painter Maurice Utrillo.

Valadon spent almost 40 years as an artist and her subject matter included female nudes, female portraits, still lifes, and landscapes.

This and the first painting are two of my favorites. I love her use of bold colors and black lines to define details.

This is a self portrait.

Check out google images for more of Valadon's work. She painted nearly 450 oil paintings and 300 drawings in her lifetime. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  3. Isn't she terrific? It's so interesting to see influences in her work from the various artists she must have worked for or associated with. She should be known for her own work, not just as Utrillo's mother!
    Thanks for the memory jog!

  4. Hi Suzi, thanks, I should have known about her but I didn't I saw the first photo on pinterest and wondered about her and looked her up; apparently she watched those who she modeled for and learned how to paint from observation, very inspiring.
