Predators on the Porch

This week I observed a couple of predators on the porch. This praying mantis is almost five inches long. When I was taking his photo he was watching me with his compound eyes.

He moved from the deck to the outside railing. I'm leaning over the railing and he's watching me as if I'm prey, rather intimidating.

This spider spent most of a week making this huge web between the roof and the deck railing. When we blow on the web he runs to the top quicker than lightening. He's left now and his web is gone as well. Must have found a nicer place to live.

Off to the farmer's market this morning, hope the rain doesn't keep folks away like last week. Thanks for reading and for all your comments.

  1. Two rainy weekends in a row--too much. It's sunny here, in spite of a forecast of rain.

  3. We had rain forecast yesterday, and for today. Not a drop yesterday and today doesn't look promising.
Glad that you had a good day despite the rain.
    I like your predators too.

  5. Toes crossed that you had a great day at the farmers market.
I am very fond of praying mantises. Usually we have at least a half dozen living in the dahlias and morning glories. This year we had one. I don't know if had anything to do with our dry spring or more likely the long cold winter killing egg sacks.

    1. Hi Suzi, thanks, I too love the praying mantis they are so unusual and I think a very smart insect. I am wondering if this is the one that came on the plants in the Spring, now grown so much over one season.

  6. Praying mantis are so fascinating! Jeff and were happy to find one on our slider screen this week. I hope there are more.
Aren't the spiders super plentiful right now? Webs everywhere! I really would prefer they stay outside though.

    1. Hi Michele, thanks, whenever I see a spider inside I get the broom and get them to crawl onto the broom section then I carry it out of doors and tap the broom and thus can relocate the spider with ease.

    1. Hi Barbara, thanks, one couple came to my booth just to get a piece of pottery and that's the only place they went, they had bought from me before, that was a real good feeling.
