Five Spice Rice

Five Spice Rice takes about 30 minutes to prepare. It's a dish I threw together from ingredients I had on hand. It's quick and easy and a meal all in one.


Cook one cup brown rice. While rice is cooking in two tablespoons of olive oil saute one quarter finely chopped red onion, about a cup of sweet peppers cut small, three garlic cloves chopped fine, and one square inch fresh ginger chopped fine. After first ingredients are soft, add one can of cut green beans, 1/4 cup of sunflower seed kernels, and one small can of sliced bamboo shoots. Next add one teaspoon of ground fresh chili paste, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1/4 cup of soy sauce, 1/8 cup of rice vinegar, 1 teaspoons of ground Chinese five spice. Gently stir these together and fold into the rice when cooked. Five Spice Rice will cleanse your sinuses and warm you up. You can add less chili paste if you prefer but it's not the kind of chili that burns but warms the palate.

Bamboo shoots contain lots of vitamins and minerals so be sure to keep those in the recipe.  Also sunflower seeds are considered one of the world's healthiest foods so don't leave them out either. I keep a large container of kernels in the pantry and add them to salads and other recipes for texture. Thanks for reading and for all your comments..

  2. I often hear them use Chinese Five Spice on the cooking channel, I need to find some ... I love cooking veggies with rice ... this sounds so good ...

  3. I like Chinese Five Spice - in moderation. Himself knows no moderation and added nearly a tablespoon ot a dish. Which made it inedible in my book.
    Yours sounds good.

    1. Hi Elephant's Child, thanks, yes I think to much would ruin a dish, it is quite strong. perhaps start out with half a teaspoon and see how you like it.

  5. I love Chinese Five Spice...I always rub it into roasting pork and pork chops along with the salt. It really adds a wonderful flavour. And I do like a good dose of chilli, too. :)
